Well i don't have a super graphics card like the rest of you, i have a nvidia 8600 something. I am currently running vista and have a pretty good rig besides the card, Duel-core 2 ghertzzzz 4gb ram and some other stuff. But i only get around 20-30 fps when playing tf2, so i was wondering could vista be holding back my fps potential since it takes up about 2gb ram just to run the god damn OS. So would i be better off upgrading to windows 7 when it comes out and maybe get better fps?
TF2 is very picky with hardware. There are people with better rigs then yours and getting the same FPS.
Besides, my brother found a Vista-7 comparison test. 7 got you an increase (on the whole) of a stunning 1 fps!
No it's not eating up your ram, it's called superfetch and Windows 7 has it also.
Small FPS boost, maybe.
I got around 10-15 FPS more.

Windows 7 uses less RAM with me than a trimmed-down XP, while in Vista it eats up most of your memory.
Now, I agree that it releases the RAM when you need it but it's still annoying as hell.

back to linux section kid!

There's something wrong with your computer.
My Vista can play TF2 at max settings with over 30 FPS and I still have some RAM left over (About 512 MB, I think, and I only have 2gb).
It's probably your "Duel-core 2 ghertzzzz". Either that or your graphics card.

How is it annoying as hell that an OS is using your ram efficiently?
How is it annoying as hell that an OS is using your ram efficiently?
I think his point is that it's not very efficient if Windows 7 does a much better job at it.
Windows 7 does not improve your FPS - in my case it got worse. But that's just because of drivers.
And OP, i had an 8600 - it's shit. Once I got an 8800 my FPS went through the roof. Went from 20 FPS in EP2 to 90+
so i guess i pretty much just need a better graphics card and maybe in the future a better cpu
I did back in 6801 through 7000. I stopped playing games afterwards though because I got tired with them.
On my 8400GS, I haven't noticed a different, but alt+tabbing takes FOREVER compared to XP.
If you have 6gigs then it isn't a problem. The people who have problems are the ones with small amounts of RAM.

OP said he had 4gb of RAM.
That's nowhere near a small amount.
Windows 7 will probably have the same FPS as any other version of Windows, maybe less because it supports GPGPU but still you wont see any performance differences. But I'm not sure since DirectX 11 may require more from a videocard. For the most part you shouldn't notice a difference.

No duh, its only newer.
It's just your graphics card holding you back, not your OS.

I use a GeForce 7900 GS and I run TF2 on max with a high res.

Yeah, and newer products can be effective at something a previous one wasn't. Thanks for proving my point.

not at a decent framerate
My 8600 GTS is fine. Runs TF2 with the ultra high autoexec at 40-60 FPS 'nd crysis on high at playable fps. It's probably his CPU.
I'm guessing it's your CPU actually. I had a 2.21Ghz Dual Core or something before, and upgrading my Graphics card really didn't help much (from 8600GTS to 260GTX), it gave some varying results from 5-25 more FPS or so on different games... But I think TF2 somehow went down in performance or something actually, at the very least it didn't help.
But upgrading my CPU from 2 to 3Ghz was a vast improvement, this is also easily seen by the great help ticking off "allow multicore support" or whatever it's named in options gives.
But yes, Windows 7 does improve your FPS slightly, Windows 7 requires less performance from your pc letting it focus more on everything else.

Its a GTX 260 not a 260 GTX.
I have a Geforce 5200 and I get like 15 FPS in TF2. :v:

I'm replying to the user above my post.

How do you do it.
I can never play an intense FPS game with less than 30 fps.
I have 9 gigs of ram. Does it matter if i have windows 7 or not for my framerate? :D

I got a 7600 and it's about the same with me at 1280x1024

How's 60 for ya?
What do you define as max and high res
