• Upside-down US flag T-shirt upsets Memorial Day shoppers
On Memorial Day, plenty of shoppers are talking about PacSun… but not because of the clothing store's big sales. Angry customers are commenting on the retailer's Facebook page and calling in complaints to the company, because of one T-shirt for sale that features a "disrespectful" upside-down American flag. Looks bitchin tbh
"I know that you'll hide behind the 1st amendment" Jesus Fucking Christ
I'll just never understand how people get so fucking uppity over a flag
I'll just never understand how people get so fucking uppity over a flag
it lets them make self righteous rants on social media
americans have a weird fetish for the flag that I'll never understand
"People died for your right to do that so don't do that" What
Isn't that the House of Cards logo?
americans have a weird fetish for the flag that I'll never understand
the flag has a ton of history built into it. we have also been basically worshiping the flag in schools too.
As an American, I don't fucking get it either. Most of these are fire-n-brimstone batty mother fuckers too, so this doesn't even gel with their "thou shall not warship idols" thing yet lo and behold Yes, the flag is a symbol for a great deal of terrible hardships and hard won victories, but the flag IS NOT those hardships or victories. It is a piece of cloth. I kinda believe it's insulting to the things the flag stands for when the object itself treated with so much importance. It makes me wonder if anyone raising so much shit about this flag REALLY gives a fuck about what it stands for, or if they're completely blind to it and they're just mad that the thing they pledged to like fucking zombies as children is getting portrayed differently.
Isn't that the House of Cards logo?
now I might be wrong, but I'm preeetty certain the concept of flying a flag upside down was around before House of Cards
americans have a weird fetish for the flag that I'll never understand
The same reason Nazi Germany was a thing.
Isn't that the House of Cards logo?
The upside-down US flag has been a thing for a lot longer then House of Cards.
"guarantees all those freedoms" lol
I'll just never understand how people get so fucking uppity over a flag
Guns and buns am I right? Hamburger buns that is, wrap that western bacon in the stars and stripes please so when I unwrap it to reveal the patriotism inside I can hang the banner on the back window of my ford pickup so whenever I look at my rear view mirror I can be reminded of what makes me free.
the flag has a ton of history built into it. we have also been basically worshiping the flag in schools too.
God, don't even get me started on the friggin' pledge kids have to do every morning. It was even worse when I was in Catholic school, when you had to add "God bless our flag" to the end of it. After moving to a public school, I found out the hard way on the morning of my first day that they don't add that bit. Coincidentally, the morning of my second day was when a bunch of planes crashed into the WTC. Hm.
"God bless our flag" SEE, this is the shit that pisses me the FUCK OFF. All it does is trivialize all the horrible and awesome events that made America come to be. God bless the flag? What about the fucking PEOPLE? I don't believe in any god, but if you did, why? why this? Why fucking this?
We're literally taught from the day we walk in to school to stand up, salute, and pledge allegiance to a flag every single school day from our first to our last. Its pretty fucked up. I have seen students get reprimanded for refusing to do it. We're basically taught to worship the damn thing.
Upside down usually means there is an extreme danger or distress. People also fly it upside down to protest.. So it isn't hard to see why people would get upset. Today is memorial day.. The flag is a symbol, its why every country rallies behind one. Our uniforms have flags that are charging...some people get upset because they lost a love one to war and the only thing they have left from that moment is a flag in a shadow box.. Shouldn't really have to explain why symbols are important, some people are just trying to be edgy or ignorant. Every time a thread like this pops up we get the same comments.
Interestingly, the shirt has been for sale since summer of last year
The upside-down US flag has been a thing for a lot longer then House of Cards.
Wasn't it typically used as a sign of distress, i.e. a fort under attack would fly their flag upside down to signify their distress and signal reinforcements? I don't see how that's offensive. Weird design for a t-shirt, but hardly offensive.
I was never forced to pledge except in middle school. High school though they let you sit quietly.
the flag has a ton of history built into it. we have also been basically worshiping the flag in schools too.
Our public schools really do have some North Korean level of nationalism going on. Every single morning, of every single day, of every single year, (About 2,300 times total) I had to stand up, put my hand on my heart, face the flag, and recite the pledge of allegiance. I pledge Allegiance to the flag of the United States of America & to the republic for which it stands, one nation, under god, indivisible, with liberty and justice for all. Originally it was MY FLAG and they changed it to THE FLAG for immigrants, but then they added UNDER GOD, not really giving a shit about people of different religions. It doesn't violate your rights if it's voluntary, therefor it sort of stayed in the pledge. How fair was it for the muslim girl in one of my classes to get in trouble because she didn't want to do the pledge. Doesn't sound very voluntary, does it This country and its patriotism is over the top and misplaced. There's no reason to be proud to be American. Land of the incarcerated, and greedy where Money trumps everything. Change the stars to dollar signs on our flag then the pledge of allegiance would make much more sense

Is that a law or flag code? Because the flag code is not law...
People getting upset about a freaking flag being turned upside down is almost like Muslims getting upset about drawings of Mohammed.
americans have a weird fetish for the flag that I'll never understand
What's hard to understand? It's a symbol, like all flags are, and it has meaning, like all symbols do. Also, what kind of schools did you people go to that forced you to "salute" the flag when saying the Pledge of Allegiance? I went to a public school in Missouri, and we only ever said the pledge on Monday (or whenever our week began when holidays and faculty days happened), and we never saluted it; we just put our right hand over our heart while saying the pledge. I never had an issue with any of this stuff-- again, in Missouri, in a shitsplat Bible-beating bumfuck town with 20ish churches and Christian worship centers of various sizes and denominations-- and most of us in the class just didn't care at the time that we had to do it. We just did it, started the day/school week, and never cared. I have no idea if the teachers cared or not, but they had us do it anyway. What's the issue here exactly? The only thing about the pledge I really didn't like and still do not like is the "under God" part. [editline]25th May 2015[/editline] Also, how is any of this on the level of North Korean nationalism/Nazi-German nationalism lol? Overreact more, why don't you.
Is that a law or flag code? Because the flag code is not law...

The United States Flag Code establishes advisory rules for display and care of the national flag of the United States of America. It is Chapter 1 of Title 4 of the United States Code (4 U.S.C. § 1 et seq). This is a U.S. federal law, but the penalty described in in Federal Law 18 USC Section 700 –[1] for failure to comply with it is not enforced and the U.S. Supreme Court has ruled that punitive enforcement would conflict with the First Amendment right to freedom of speech.[2]
Actually.
