The End Is Nigh! Stephen Hawkings says mankind won't survive another 1000 years on earth

...unless we migrate to other planets
Physicist Stephen Hawking, speaking at the Cedars-Sinai Medical Center in Los Angeles, said if humans don't migrate from the planet Earth to colonize other planets, they'll face extinction in 1,000 years. So, phew, we're good, guys. We've got like 900-plus years to just sit on this. That's a relief.
Would be interesting to see what Earth and Human kind is like in 1000 years, even just 100 would be awesome to see.
We'll all be sitting in wheelchairs unable to reproduce without the aid of robots.

You know it's a pretty amazing when you think about how lucky we are to have an Earth-like planet LITERALLY RIGHT NEXT TO US in our solar system. I mean sure it's pretty much just a dead, cold, lifeless rock, but we could definitely change it to suit our needs for a planet. Just imagine how many civilizations out there in the Cosmos don't have a similar planet to theirs in their own solar system. Shit, it's like there's our opportunity, right in front of our face, and we aren't even using it. It's kinda frustrating.

Optimistically, we will eventually have the technology to effectively colonize almost every planet and moon in this system.
Though I'm sure Earth and Mars will be the only ones we'll be able to be out on the surface, mostly exposed to the atmosphere with.

You realize the terraformation process would with modern technology take thousands and thousands of years, correct?
I don't see how this is dumb? It's true, if even insanely optimistic.

It's true, I dunno what type of scale we could have but with a population of 7 billion and a bunch of countries not giving a fuck about resources or the planet it's self. We doing pretty good.

I think we're still tryin' to think of how to work out that darn magnetic field issues it's having. It's kinda like having a vintage sportscar in your workshop, but there's just a few vital parts missing that you can't really get spare.
A thousand years is a very long period of time. With a thousand more years of civilization we can look forward to a million technologies that can help make life on the planet better and also allow humanity to expand.
Hey, well, before that he was saying we'd all be extinct in a hundred years if we didn't go out into space. :v:
Stephen Hawkings ought to rename himself Hari Seldon, really.
You realize the terraformation process would with modern technology take thousands and thousands of years, correct?
Would it? We've never tried it before, besides, just establishing a human colony on Mars should be enough to help ensure our species' survival as a whole.

Indeed, look how different things were 1000 years ago, back then the biggest part of the population (europe and the like) didn't even know half the planet actually existed :v:
Interesting article, although I wish it had more information on exactly why this is the case. I didn't like how half of it was talking about Hawking's medical condition rather than his accusation.
We've come so far in the past 1000 years as it is, going from pretty much barbarians to having pretty much everything we need immediately, even 3rd world countries now are miles better off than how they used to be 100 years ago.
wonder what his reasoning for that is
by 3013 I think that colonization (at least partially) of other celestial bodies will have occurred through normal growth, not just colonizing for the sake of leaving earth

The Roman Empire existed well over 1000 years ago, hardly barbarians.
This is almost the plot to Isaac Asimov's Foundation
Stephan Hawking will survive, we know this.

And the Mongols were about a 1000, so what's your point? Civilizations have high points and low points all over the globe.
600 years ago, Aztecs were committing human sacrifice.
I wouldn't mind if the world ended right now, cause I'd be part of the last of the human race. If everybody's dead then I can't be missing owt.
You realize the terraformation process would with modern technology take thousands and thousands of years, correct?
That's for a full terraforming effort, there's nothing to stop us going right now and building a super strong dome and changing the local environment to have a home city and then just start seeding the rest of the planet with engineered life to do the work for us.
Smash a few meteors into the poles to release the gases and water and it'll be good as new.

And you'll have no one read your memoirs on such a historical event, brilliant.

Probably the fact that we're about to go through one of the most colossal changes our species will ever see, climate change from a cold period to a hot period, as well as the fact that we're over due dor a lot of major disasters, comets, super volcanoes, mega tsunamis, they all happen at some point or another and we're pretty much overdue for all of them.
I think it's unwise to assume that technology will solve everything. It would be better to behave practically and take technological breakthroughs as a nice side effect to otherwise preserving the specie's future though good planning and preparation.
My uneducated thoughts:
I think it's pretty hard for widespread species like us to become extinct within just 1000 years. That'd suggest whatever caused the extinction would affect this entire planet to such extent that no society would be able to escape it. Civilizations may fall, the global society we have now may fall, but I think humans are still going to exist within the next 1000 years.

Just because we've defied statistical probability so far doesn't automatically mean we'll soon not.

You really could just rewrite that sentence and replace humans with dinosaurs.
Our technology won't save us in our current form if the shit really hits the fan, having some little enclave of a few thousand people really won't do much good for us, science would pretty much completely stagnate, those people would be missing out on some resource that are completely vital to modern living.
The best option is just to get a few million people the fuck off Earth as soon as humanly possible.
