Windows 8.1? Though supposedly not part of the original plan for Blue, these two UI options are looking more likely. Reports from a couple of different forums from this past weekend raised the possibility that Microsoft might be moving toward allowing users to skip booting into the Metro-Style Start menu and instead start their PCs in desktop mode. (Winbeta.org noted the thread about this on April 14.)
Note that this comes from Mary Jo Foley, who's been very well informed about Microsoft's plans in the past...
Improvements, one at a time...
I hope they do something to refine the start menu, at least. It'd be kind of lame if they just left it the same as it was in 7.
Nice of them to change their mind.
april fools
Hopefully they'll remove metro in 8.2!
Windows 8 was the invasion of Iraq and now they're rebuilding all the basic institutions and starting to get life back to normal
Improvements, one at a time...
It's an improvement, but it's not like it was needed or actually changes Windows 8 at all. You're still using the Start Screen, you're still going to either deal with it and start using it, or find an alternate shell. Though skipping the start screen on boot could be useful for some people, it is of such minimal impact that I can't see why it's in the news at all. There is no news/ no chance of MS actually bringing back the Start Menu as there is nothing it offers over the Start Screen to justify either bloating Windows by having both, or removing a feature that actually works because people refuse to adapt. Especially when these people are a minority and there is software that can solve their issues.
Windows 8 was the invasion of Iraq and now they're rebuilding all the basic institutions and starting to get life back to normal
so what, was vista 9/11 or something?
I actually like Windows 8, I'm glad I upgraded before the price increase.
Now give us back translucent window borders [sub][sub]please?[/sub][/sub]
so what, was vista 9/11 or something?
Yes.
The article said it will bring back the start button, it's still a Start screen
Well that is a bit of good news but there is still a lot of bad UX on the desktop.
Basically click start button to bring up Metro
the only real reason i'd like the start menu back is for an easy way to shut down my computer instead of this charms bar bullshit
Alt + F4 on your desktop Power button (assuming default power settings, this should show the options menu) Desktop shortcuts Command promt shutdown.exe from search A hammer to the PSU (note: users survival is not high with this one) There are so many quicker ways to just down your machine than the start menu.
metro is pretty much the start menu. it's literally two clicks to get what I want to launch just as it was in the previous versions of windows.
Like The Baconator said, it's just the button they're bringing back. It's still going to be the same start screen.
i like clicking
Desktop shortcuts it is then :v: Or those silly Sidebar gadgets that offer the menus. Quite a few ways even with just clicking now that I think about it...
Sorry but you're going to have to change a lot more than that to get anybody interested in Win8 (or 8.1). Now Win8 looks even more similar to the OS most people are already using. They have even less reason to upgrade than they did before.
this is pretty much the only reason why people don't like this, though.
Now give us back translucent window borders [sub][sub]please?[/sub][/sub]
I love aero too. So I used google to figure out how to get something similar on windows 8 (When I decide to upgrade.) It would be pretty nice of them to add both the start menu and a boot to desktop feature.
So in 8.2 we'll get a (refined) start menu back? Great, those with win8 would have to pay for Microsoft fixing their fuckups.
Oh cool if metro is gone I'll bite
Metro won't be gone.
So in 8.2 we'll get a (refined) start menu back? Great, those with win8 would have to pay for Microsoft fixing their fuckups.
No, any and all upgrades to 8 will be free for owners of a previous version. They aren't paying a cent if they already own Windows 8. If you're upgrading from 7, yeah, you'll pay for 8.1 and then receive all future updates to Windows 8 free. Why the fuck is everyone so hateful towards Windows 8 and this new update tactic. It's much better to update your OS with actual features instead of releasing a few service packs and ditching it for a new one a year or two later. I've never seen Facepunch complain so much about free DLC.
Only getting it because I get it for free
metro is pretty much the start menu. it's literally two clicks to get what I want to launch just as it was in the previous versions of windows.
Can you bring up explorer and control panel without using the windows key or right clicking in two clicks?
Can you bring up explorer and control panel without using the windows key or right clicking in two clicks?
yes

Perhaps I'll give it a try.
