WEST HARTFORD, Conn. -- A new furnace was being installed Monday in the home of a man who attempted to cut off his own arm after it became stuck in the old furnace.
Jonathan Metz became trapped in the basement of his West Hartford home while cleaning his furnace. Metz's arm became trapped last Sunday while he was working on his furnace boiler. He was rescued Wednesday, a day after he used his own tools and cut through most of his left arm.
When he became trapped, Metz's cell phone and dog were upstairs and his screams for help went unheard. He attempted to amputate his own arm using a saw.
As days went by, his co-workers at the Travelers became concerned and drove by his home and saw his car and heard his dog barking frantically. The co-workers contacted police, who found Metz at a critical time. Doctors said if Metz had remained in his basement any longer, he may not have survived.
Firefighters had to cut apart the old furnace to rescue Metz.
Metz, 31, was released from the ICU on Saturday and said he was looking forward to being fitted with a prosthetic arm.
The new furnace was being donated by TLC Energy in East Hartford. "We're reaching out for someone who needs help at this time," said TLC service manager Reginald Duby
The new furnace is quite a gift. They can cost anywhere from a few thousand dollars to more than $10,000.
Good thing that furnace didn't cost an arm AND a leg.
Good to the local company, nice to see people care.

Must of cost an arm and a leg to build.
Personally, I'd rather be donated a new arm.

Oh wait, that's a heart, not an arm
Wait so how did his arm get stuck in there that bad.
it's a fucking furnace.
Edit:
Not to insult him or anything, but I can't think of that many things that could go wrong with your average home's furnace that could cause this.

Good for him, he needs one of these, though.

he dropped a tool somewhere in the vicinity of the furnace, tried to get it but his arm got stuck and he remained there for two days until attempting to cut his arm off. He was later found, but the process of removing his halfway cut off arm "finished the job" you could say.
Have you seen the pictures of blood in his basement? Fucking horrifying.

link plz?
I saw the news story about that guy. Fearless
Maybe he'll avoid getting stuck in this one

i doubt that
Why would you cut off your own arm after just 2 days?
I mean at least SOMEBODY will check on you if you go missing for a few days.
Because flesh can decompose and affect your entire body? Probably killing you in a day, at most 2, after it sets in?
This guy most likely saved his life by doing this.

You have absolutely zero guarentee that somebody is going to come looking for you. The guy probably didn't like the idea of leaving his fate up to pure chance, and decided that he wanted to try and do something himself. He acted a bit too rashly, from what I can remember he actually said something along those lines in the article but it's understandable to me at least what his motives possibly were.

Yes because a trapped arm just decays on it's own doesn't it. From what was said he was a bit brash in cutting his own arm off so soon, it's not as if it was rotting and the furnace wasn't going to burn the house down so he needn't really do it.

We got beat to the puns already I see.

No I haven't, because there is no source link.
Ugghhhh do any of you think you could cut your own fucking arm of with a saw if you were stuck?

His arm was trapped in a furnace, but from what I can tell from reading the first article, not the one in the OP (something you should do next time). He smelled rotting flesh and had to cut it off. Rotting flesh gives off toxins that are harmful to the body. Waiting it out would have made his condition much worse. For flesh to actually start decaying, his arm must have had its blood circulation cut off. If a certain part of the body looses bloodflow, then it begins to shut down and soon after, die. His arm was stuck for 3 days. More than enough time for the cells to shutdown and die. Just think of a nice juicy red steak turning green, rotten, and smelly.

Here, he can have my spare Lego arm.
I really want to know exactly how he got his arm stuck inside.
I just can't imagine any possible position or way, that would force you to cut your own arm off, instead of just loosen a few more screws.
