I have a PSU, Case, Cooling, Graphics card. It is mATX
I have a P5QPL-AM and a E7200 at the moment with 3 gbs of DDR2 RAM @ 800mhz. I may be able to sell them for a total of 450 including a graphics card I don't use.
I have a PNY GTX 260 Core 216.
I am willing to go AMD, or intel. For that much money, give me a motherboard, RAM, Processor.
I am already looking at a Q9400 just to replace my E7200. Or maybe I should just get a better quad than that. Tell me!
budget change, 450 I might be able to get.
You aren't going to get anything better than what you have now for $370.
You aren't going to get anything better than what you have now for $370.
With $370 he could almost get an i5-750, a decent motherboard and some cheap ram.
I've checked and I might be able to get an AM3 AMD Phenom II X4 945 or whatever, it's just RAM now.
[editline]09:39AM[/editline]
AMD Phenom™ II X4 945 Quad-Core 3.0GHz w/ 8MB Cache (Retail Box, Socket AM3)
Gigabyte GA-MA785GMT-UD2H w/ Radeon HD 4200, DualDDR3 1600, 7.1 Audio, Gigabit Lan, 1394, Hybrid CrossFireX, HDMI
Patriot Extreme Performance Viper Series DDR3 3GB (3 x 1GB) PC3-10666 Enhanced Latency DIMM Kit
How do you think that will do? It totals up at 369.57 or something like that. If you find a better price, tell me. I am only using a 32-bit system btw.
Get 2x1GB ram
Get 2x1GB ram
Yeah, but won't that bottleneck me later on?
AMD doesn't even use tri-channel RAM. Get 2 2GB sticks would be my suggestion.
It will be faster than 3x1GB
It will be faster than 3x1GB
Ok, sounds good.
[editline]12:59PM[/editline]
Ok, I changed it to Patriot Extreme Performance Viper Series DDR3 2GB (2 x 1GB) PC3-15000 Low Latency Dual Channel Kit at 1800mhz.
That is some killer RAM. I can get more later too for all 4 slots.
Question, the RAM says 1.9 volt, the MB says 1.8. Will there be any problems or since the MB overclocks to 1800 mhz it is higher?
Even better, I can get the Phenom II 955 X4 Black Edition now.
EDIT: Oh wait, that cpu doesn't support that RAM. DAMMIT!

Don't get RAM that requires a higher voltage than the motherboard can support. You're likely to break something if you do.
Things have changed, if I can sell my old mother board for $60 and I get a good amount for some other stuff, my budget will be $450

If you can get $450 for just a Mobo/Proc/RAM, I would highly recommend these.

Total ~$445
Ok, if I can get around 440-450, I am considering this stuff for AMD:
AMD Phenom™ II X4 955 Quad-Core Black Edition 3.2GHz w/ 8MB Cache (Retail Box, Socket AM3)
Mushkin XP3-12800 Blackline DDR3 SDRAM, 4GB Dual Channel Kit (2 x 2GB) 1600
Gigabyte GA-MA785GMT-UD2H w/ Radeon HD 4200, DualDDR3 1600, 7.1 Audio, Gigabit Lan, 1394, Hybrid CrossFireX, HDMI
Intel:
Patriot Extreme Performance Viper Series DDR3 3GB (3 x 1GB) PC3-10666 Enhanced Latency DIMM Kit (I'll ask for another stick on my birthday so I have 4 x 1 Dual channel.) 1333mhz
Intel Core™ i5 Processor 661 3.33GHz w/ 4MB Cache, HD Graphics or 750? Which one?
Gigabyte GA-H55M-S2H w/ DualDDR3 1600, 7.1 Audio, Gigabit Lan, CrossFireX, HDMI
And either would have a PNY GTX 260 Core 216.
Which one should it be!?

I'd have to use a different Mother board, and I live in Canada, forgot to mention that.
newegg.ca charges a lot for taxes and shipping so I won't use them. You can go to memoryexpress.com (canada only) and they have free shipping and only charge gst.
Personally after coming from an AMD setup, I would recommend the Intel at the moment. About the processor get the 750, you don't want the integrated graphics anyway. I would still recommend either 2 1GB sticks, or 2 2GB sticks though, going with a tri setup is actually going to slow you down right now.
I would recommend the AMD setup. After looking at benchtests for either cpu it seems that the phenom scores higher.

you should check out the xeon 3440. Specs of an i7 for only a tad bit more than the i5.

No.
OP, get a 965 BE and an AM3/AM2+ motherboard that supports DDR2, and reuse your current RAM.
AMD Phenom™ II X4 955 Quad-Core Black Edition 3.2GHz w/ 8MB Cache (Retail Box, Socket AM3)
Mushkin XP3-12800 Blackline DDR3 SDRAM, 4GB Dual Channel Kit (2 x 2GB) 1600

Intel Core™ i5 Processor 750
Gigabyte GA-H55M-S2H w/ DualDDR3 1600, 7.1 Audio, Gigabit Lan, CrossFireX, HDMI
Or,
Mushkin XP2-8000 Xtreme Performance Redline DDR2 SDRAM, 4GB Dual Pack (2 x 2GB) 1066
Asus M3N78-VM w/ Geforce 8200, Hybrid SLI, DualDDR2 1066, 7.1 Audio, Gigabit Lan, PCI-E 2.0, HDMI
AMD Phenom™ II X4 965 Quad-Core Black Edition 3.4GHz w/ 8MB Cache (Retail Box, Socket AM3)
I'm not sure about the last one, it doesn't seem very future friendly.
i5 750 > 661, cheaper and better and you don't need the crappy integrated graphics that's lumped with it
needs dual channel DDR3, you've got triple channel
Snip because OP has :downs:
Also, I am going to get 4 gigs later on with the intel so ignore the 3x1.
Well, I haven't decided yet, and also, I'm going to sell some of my XBox 360 games that I don't play anymore but are still worth something. So I will try and get as much money as possible. Those 3 systems are just possibilities. I will let everyone know when I have enough money though.
At this point I don't think the Phenom II is really much of an option. The i5 750 is consistently better than the 965BE X4 in nearly every application, and I'm fairly sure it also draws less power. The i5 750 also happens to overclock better. (assuming you have a 3rd party heat sink, the stock i5 heatsink is worthless.)
the stock i5 heatsink is worthless
duuuhh it can't be used to overclock duuuhhh it's useless duuuhhh even to people who don't overclock duuuhhh

It's loud as shit, runs relatively hot compared to nearly all over stock coolers, and it provides a pathetic overclock.
Fairly sure that qualifies as "useless".
[editline]06:57PM[/editline]
Not to mention I called the i5 heatsink "worthless" in reference to overclocking, you're pretty obviously taking my statement out of context for no reason other than to make a stupid comment.

No it's not. I can barely hear mine, it idles at 35 degrees Celsius and after two hours of GTA 4, it's at 45 degrees Celsius. You obviously did something wrong with yours. And before you say something like "You were lucky", not really. I've built i5 750 systems for three of my friends, same temperatures there. You obviously did something wrong with yours.
(Have you even owned one before, or are you just saying things you read in some review on Newegg?)
[editline]12:06AM[/editline]
It may not be good for overclocking. But, what do you expect? It's not made for it.
[editline]12:11AM[/editline]
So, basically, if you're thinking about overclocking, buy another cooler. If not, the stock's just fine.

shits about to go thermonuclear up in here
Get 2x1GB ram
No no. Get one 2GB stick now, and one later.
The difference between single-channel and dual-channel isn't very much and won't affect him drastically.
Besides, you can't even run triple-channel on a socket 1156 motherboard, which would make three single 1GB sticks ridiculous.
I may just have had extreme luck with my coolers, though, as it would seem like a major shitton of people are complaining about them.

I recently built an i7 860s system, and the stock cooler is definitely loud enough to be annoying. I haven't checked exact temperatures yet, but I've heard quite a few reports of Lynnfield i5/i7 coolers running rather hot. Also compared to how far you can push Phenom IIs/Core 2 Quads/Nehalems on their stock coolers, the i5's stock cooler is rather disappointing.
