Porcupine Tree are a progressive band formed in 1989 in London by singer/guitarist Steven Wilson, who produced most of the early material himself as a side project for his art rock band No Man, with Tim Bowness. The band began as a joke, with Wilson fabricating a backstory involving 70's "legends" The Porcupine Tree, featuring members such as Linton Samuel Dawson. The band's early releases were acclaimed in underground circles and before long the band's music began developing in a more song oriented direction than the ambient psychadelic music Wilson produced early on, and soon a full live band was formed, which furthered the movement towards a more "song" band. As the band progressed their sound continued to develop, drawing influences from metal music, pushing the albums into much darker territory first seen on In Absentia in 2002 (considered by many to be the band's best). Each album has progressively embraced modern music more, with the latest release The Incident drawing on some electronic influence too, over the course of the title track's 55 minute running time. Current Members: Steven Wilson – vocals, guitars, piano, synthesizers and many more (1987–) Richard Barbieri – keyboards, synthesizers, piano and sound processing (1993–) Colin Edwin – bass guitar and double bass(1993–) Gavin Harrison – drums and percussion (2002–) John Wesley – guitar, backing vocals (2002–) [Live only] Former members Chris Maitland – drums, backing vocals (1993–2002) Albums: On the Sunday of Life... As an album, I love In Absentia. Trains is an awesome song.
Oh yeah, goatse 2nd post.
Yeah I was wondering why all of a sudden that's there but my friend filled me in.
I really love the song "Fear of a Blank Planet." Their drummer is a genius.
X-box is a god to me A finger on the switch My mother is a bitch My father gave up ever trying to talk to me
Steven Wilson is my bro.
I love Deadwing. Amazing album.

I left them out for a reason, cunt :buddy: And seeing as how your thread hasn't had a post in 5 months, there's no search function, and I haven't been posting here that long... :ghost:

Fear of a blank planet and the incident were boring, really. They didn't try anything new or interesting, it felt like the same song through and through.

In what way is this progressive rock? It doesn't sound anything like the other progressive rock groups I've heard.

The Incident was a real grower for me, and it took me seeing it live in its entirety to fully appreciate what an amazing piece of music it is. i like porcupine tree :3
With all my favouritebands, it has always been these periods where I listened to the all the time and then I grow tired of the music and I almost never listen to them again. With Porcupine Tree though I don't listen to them as much anymore, but I still really love their music and listen to it from time to time.
I've been listening to Porcupine Tree for the whole day and now I realized that I had turned scrobbling off in the morning. FML
in absentia is great
I love Porcupine Tree. One of my favorite bands. [editline]02:29AM[/editline] Can anyone tell me what it says on this shirt (other than porcupine tree)? http://www.porcupinetreemerch.com/incidentdrawingtee.html
I love Porcupine Tree. One of my favorite bands. [editline]02:29AM[/editline] Can anyone tell me what it says on this shirt (other than porcupine tree)? http://www.porcupinetreemerch.com/incidentdrawingtee.html
Mostly scrawled lyrics from the self titled section of The Incident, if that makes sense. I got that same t shirt at their gig in December, fuckin' rad
Porcupine Tree have been my favourite band since I was 11 and Steve has been my idol since I was 12. It's not the long epics or dense arrangements alone that make them so amazing, what makes me love them so much is that they have songs (Collapse The Light Into Earth, Glass Arm Shattering, .3, Dark Matter, Stop Swimming etc.) that consistently make me either shiver, or want to cry just from how beautiful they are. They are seriously one of the best bands out there, and I hate to sound like one of those obsessive worshipping fans, but Steven Wilson is quite simply a genius, and the most talented musician since John Lennon.
Fear of a blank planet and the incident were boring, really. They didn't try anything new or interesting, it felt like the same song through and through.
Well that might be because The Incident is one song. Although I was a bit disappointed with FOABP, except for Way out of Here, Sentimental and Anesthetize.
I just love Heartattack In A Layby from the In Absentia album, the ending harmony is so beautiful *tear*
Well that might be because The Incident is one song. Although I was a bit disappointed with FOABP, except for Way out of Here, Sentimental and Anesthetize.
I know it was a concept album, but it really doesn't help if the foundation of the album isn't good. Drawing the line was the only song I actually disliked, but the rest felt samey, I guess, and it wasn't very interesting to me. I love the rest of their albums. In absentia and the sky moves sideways are some of my favorite albums.
Just got the Anesthetize DVD. I highly recommend it, the setlist could have been a bit better, but I think Black Matter made up for that. I thought it was a bit off ending on Halo too, I would've expected an earlier song. :( I'm new to the band so it was nice to get a good scope of material I hadn't heard before, I may get the first DVD soon as well.

It's a great DVD. I've just preordered my copy of the digipack one :buddy:
Such a good and creative band. I got into them through Facepunch too. I love Deadwing, even though it's a bit different then their other albums, it still has a great concept.
Porcupine Tree is awesome. I used to listen to them a lot more than I do now, however, I still remember many of the songs of beginning to end, and the band has really had a huge inpact on my taste in music.

There's a MySpace with the first 15 pages of it kicking about. Could be epic
This band is such a big influence to me and my tastes and the music I write. I've been listening to them obsessively for about one and a half years now. Haven't really listened to much else, which is narrow-minded but whatever. Actually I was going to make this thread but in the end, I didn't bother, so creds to OP and I love you very much. I'm not too sold on the Incident for the most part, but the second disc was brilliant, Black Dahlia especially. Time Flies is an amazing song too. But In Absentia and Deadwing are the albums I consider to be their peak. I hope things pick up from the Incident, I don't like the whole darker, more metal aspect that's going on - I like metal in general, but I reckon it's detracting from the music, now. Also, Lasse Hoile, the guy who makes the music videos, is a fucking genius. Anyway, Steven Wilson has like a billion side projects, which are really good. You guys should check them out. Check it out: Solo project Steve Wilson's solo album, Insurgentes. Gas masks. Insurgentes is brilliant, I bought it on release. Very conceptual, also technically brilliant. Song - Insurgentes. One of the more normal songs on the album. He also does cover albums which you can buy on the website which are pretty cool. Blackfield Band he started with Israeli dude Aviv Geffen. Often described as Art Rock, its a bit different to Porcupine Tree, its also very nice. Single by Blackfield - Hello. Anyway that's always a lot of fun for Porcupine Tree listeners. Sounds pretty similar. I notice Lightbulb Sun and Signify don't get half as much recognition as they should. I wonder why.
I saw Porcupine Tree a few months ago; fucking amazing experience. They played The Incident from start to finish.
I love Porcupine Tree. One of my favorite bands. Just bought The Incident, going to listen it fully tomorrow :v:
