I like the idea, having a special lane for self-driving cars vastly increases throughput assuming there's enough of them to fully saturate it. The picture doesn't do it justice, in reality self-driving cars would be much tighter-packed than regular cars, almost literally bumper to bumper, not to mention faster and practically immune to traffic.
I think it's a great idea, but you'd need a decent number of self driving cars on the road to justify it. There was a huge shitstorm here when they put in bicycle lanes downtown, I can only imagine the outrage if a self driving lane was put in and only a couple of cars actually use it.
