A good thing imo, but i hope that they dont try focusing exclusively on it. There needs to be a good balance between casual and competitive play as far as features go.
Everything that they have done thus far though for the pre-alpha, and everything that they are making with the community as well (since it is basically a game developed by both Epic, UE4 devs, and the community) has been great. I just hope that we get more things like Assault, Domination, and Onslaught in the future.
Maybe after the Pre-Alpha is finished we'll see more things like those, as right now it seems like they want to finish up things that seem "core" to the game (like DM and CTF) before progressing to other, more fun things.
I would really like to see more talent outside of Epic working on it though. Alot has been done by the community already, and theres certainly room for more of it as far as I see. Ultimately I'd say the future of this game is bright.
This sounds really cool to me. Watch competitive Quake or UT99/2k4 and it's just as, if not more interesting than CS:GO since there's a lot of vertical gameplay and players are generally much, much more mobile.

Agreed. I'd say that If you think CS:GO matches look thrilling you should really look into watching some really good Unreal Tournament matches. This match in UT99 is one of my favorites, for example:

Couldn't hurt, but UT3, UT2004 and UT99 had absolutely 0 "focus" on competitive and they were great. If you go overboard trying to make the game competitive it can have a tendency to ruin the fun of it. People get more worried about their rank than just going and fragging.
I'll remain cautiously optimistic, but if it turns into a csgo rank fest it'll take away a lot of the fun of the game I imagine.

That's how the community gets toxic.

UT has always had a casual end to it but i dont think that makes the game entirely casual. UT has always been more casual than competitive in the past though, but it was a game that was played competitively in the past even if it was the focus. I'd imagine past UT games such as UT99 and 2k4 had sort of a 75% focus on casual play and a 25% focus on competitive, and what epic is doing right now to me feels like a good 50/50 balance, especially with the community involved. And even then, I wouldnt necessarily say e-sports = toxicity or dead games, and Epic are trying hard to give the game more than just "rank-fest" stuff to make sure it works.
Bottom line, just because Epic want to support their competitive side more, I wouldnt say that means you have to worry about the casual end of it being dropped. Especially with the community's involvment and the fact that Epic want to bring back Onslaught eventually. As this game evolves, it will continue to look better and better and hopefully for everybody too, you ultimately will just need to give it time.
TL;DR: UT has always had a competitive end, Epic are just paying some more attention to it than they have in the past this time around. Dont worry about it, and if you wanna check out what the gameplay of the game play the pre-alpha and try sharing your thoughts on the forums for the game.
A good balance between the two would do the game a big favor, really.
