What is the best video editing software? I would prefer it to be free. I was going to buy this, but I wanted to check with you guys first to see if there are better, free ones. I just need something for some recreational editing, nothing professional.
Oh hi, this thread again.
Adobe After Effects
Free/Cheap: Movie Studio Actually good: Vegas Pro, Premiere, After Effects
It just drives me crazy that the "actually good stuff" is like $500-600. I don't have that money for a small hobby of mine. So think of the price range of <$100.

[editline]8th May 2011[/editline] But if some stranger throws $600 at you on the street, get Sony Vegas.
Try Lightworks: http://www.lightworksbeta.com/ Some really big movies have been made with it, Kings Speech being one of them. Best of all, it has gone open source, meaning it's free!
Another vote for Lightworks
just torrent something like adobe after effects or sony vegas (User was banned for this post ("Warez" - Craptasket))
just torrent something like adobe after effects or sony vegas
Avast, the pirate Steve!

I got it and it's pretty good.
Sony Vegas Pro is pretty good, but After Effects would be better if you're gonna do more editing than compiling as such

It isn't an NLE like vegas, premiere, or final cut. It's VE software.

Vegas.
After Effects is a compositing software and not for general editing. Adobe Premiere is the counterpart of Vegas. [editline]14th May 2011[/editline] I'm late
Lightworks looks pretty damn good.
Avid if you want to be pro.
OP just because you have expensive software/ the "best" video editing software, it doesn't mean you'll automatically be able to make the most kickass video right out the box. Different software are designed for different usages/complexity levels, and you'll still have to learn your stuff.
Adobe After Effects Cs4, but it's Not out anymore so get Cs5.5
Keep in mind that when most people say "video editing" they mean Vegas/Premiere/WMM/iMovie/etc , NLE's. Not things like AE.
