I thought it was a good game despite there being no reason to explore the map, having absolutely no downtime so doing the side missions feels awkward, and the game is a collection of mini-games with shooting and driving parts in between
I'd just like to say that this game is the farthest thing from noir in terms of writing and atmosphere.

i'd disagree. i mean you're playing as a cop rising up the ranks and trying to solve cases that get more confusing as you go on, questioning yourself.. and narrating what you do.. it's pretty noir

It's not really noir, it's heavily lacking in atmosphere (pretty much the finale chase was the only noir part of the game)
The game aged REALLY badly, like, seriously, the super-dooper animated faces thing looks like arse today. Gameplay had a really innovative concept - you dont play as a detective in every game! - but it doesn't really play fair (Starting from the set of answers - for some reason they replaced bully/force with lie, coach with truth, which ends up in situations such as "Hmm, I think this lady might be forgetting something, therefore I will doubt her statement", and then phelps screams and calls her a noosy old hag)
And it really feels awful in game - sometimes, even if you have all the stuff figured out, the game outright traps you in awful dialogue and forces to make a wrong decision. It's actually quite common for a person to say truth, but games considers you pressing the truth button as a wrong choice - you'd have to press the lie button, and then phelps would ask the person something different and THEN you'd hear a lie
Everything outside of the chases and general gameplay is awful. The world is quite large, but it's simply empty and hella boring. The main story is simply shit.
Sorry to say, but if you want to buy this game now, it's way too late to appreciate the only thing it had going. But if you do, prepare for some really tough time trying to enjoy it.
it felt like the world was made with all this detail for absolutely no reason at all.
I wonder if it was because they were planning on releasing a lot more DLC but the company making it went down-under before they could.

I admitingly do remember a few issues, like with the glasses. I forgot the exact context, but I think it was something like this:
Someone says man has had a pair of glasses for a while, meanwhile, I distinctly remember seeing a glasses case that signified that the pair of glasses were new, so I chose lie, with that as my evidence.
...Which caused Cole to them accuse the woman of murder. Wildly misleading options.

personally i still replay it every now and then and still enjoy it, and think the faces look good (they can still look silly with what they pull but its not like its a perfected technology yet)
I got it cheap in a sale so maybe that's why I don't hate it for the flaws it has.
To me the story was very good for a game and had some truly interesting characters. The investigation was also something different and refreshing even with it's interrogation flaws. Know this though, beside the story and it's cases there's very little to do. It's a shame, the city feels like a lot of effort was put into it but it only serves as a background and not much else. I enjoyed my run through it but I often mention L.A. Noire as a game you play once and you experience it all.
This game would be interesting to get for comedic purposes, other than that it really failed on the initial concept, and it's more apparent than ever today

None of the murder cases had anything to do with Cole or the main story except for the last 3-4 and the whole game felt like a CSI mystery of the week type thing where all the cases had no significance to any plot. The game takes place in a sunny and vibrant California with perfect protagonist: Golden Hero Boy, wife and kids, bacon and eggs, golly gee and all that.
The only thing that ties this to the noir genre is that you are a detective who solves murder mysteries.
I like the game, although I could never do the interviews without the digital guide because I suck at reading faces. But yeah, the facial mo-cap tech really hasn't aged well. Still, I'd say it's worth a buy.
I still think the faces looked amazing, if a bit strange at times (like they were animated right on top of the face). It's definitely worth it if you have a few bucks to kick around, I loved the story up until the ending
I dunno, the faces looked rather jarring when the same actors was in a shot.
I remember somewhere in the intro where they basically used 3 actresses for all the faces of like 15 people and it felt surreal.
I didn't like it. Face animation is sweet but i didn't like everything else. Specially the gameplay in general. Very boring.

But that happens in literally every game in existence that has crowds.
I found it really annoying how the game pretty much punishes you for making the right decision. Like, I found a lot of evidence that seemed to point to this guy, so I accuse him and then the chief goes "WHAT THE FUCK, YOU WERE SUPPOSED TO CHOOSE THE COMMIE! IT WOULD LOOK BETTER". So basically, just choose the minority or the communist or whatever when there is one because the game gives you shit if you don't.

Yeah except you don't really get punished. Everything still proceeds as usual
The game's getting a lot of flak in these comments, but for five bucks, it's more than worth your time and money simply for the novelty factor.
Yeah except you don't really get punished. Everything still proceeds as usual
You lose points for not choosing the right suspect, is that not a punishment?
I really can't play through the game because the irrational dialogue just makes such a crazy disconnect to me
Also finding evidence is a fun game of spinning in circles
You lose points for not choosing the right suspect, is that not a punishment?
Did the points even matter? I haven't played it in a few years.
I have to say that this game is actually unique, it has it flaws for sure and the free roaming game design doesn't match up to well with the story and gameplay itself.
That said the game is really good and atmospheric, the voice acting and animations are amazing and it's just really enjoyable to play as an detective and unravel mysteries. The lie system is really tricky and you simply got to play this game for it's unique idea.
My sister played through this recently and really loved it. I couldn't help but join in at some points. Has its issues, but a really great game.
My only problem was that the dialogue options didn't reallyreaflect what "I" was going to say sometimes, resulting in fucking up.
Still one of my most favourite games ever. The historical immersion is fantastic, I've rarely seen such a level of detail and accuracy.
I also think the writing is great, but doesn't transpose so well to gameplay.
Playing in 60 FPS thanks to some program called Widescreen Fixer (I think) made the game much more enjoyable for me, but I wouldn't recommend it to everyone since it causes driving problems.
