Thank fuck. Resident Evil 6 was fun in it's own way, but I miss something in the realm of Resident Evil: Outbreak and how it did horror. More puzzle solving, finding shiny little items, and feeling venerable.
I didn't even like Resi6 as a shooter or a co op game.

I weep everytime I remember that resident evil now has coop... Its like giving Mario an M4 straight out of call of duty.

Meh, some parts of 5 were really good, especially that mansion DLC... There may be a place for coop in Resident Evil. That said, yeah, 4 was damn near perfect, so maybe I'm wrong.
"Resident Evil will turn into a more Resident Evil-ish game."
That's how I read it.
Funnily enough I had a chat today with a mate about what happened to Resi, apparently after 4 it went bonkers altogether. I'd like to see things return to the original trilogy 1996-1999, hopefully if these guys are serious targeting their core fanbase they will need to take a long hard look at the past and see why those games worked so well, then make something new out of it.
Of course I have no faith in them, I expect a hilarious trainwreck.
Capcom says a lot of stuff, they said Resident Evil 6 will be "back to roots horror" and it's not going to be a "Quick Time Event-Fest".
Then the game was released.
imo Leon's campaign in RE6 had all the right stuff to be scary, except they didn't actually know how to make things scary. like they had the right kind of combat, potentially horrifying situations, and the settings are about as scary as RE4's, but it's like they literally did not understand the concept of tension so they just threw in lots of zombies. can't really speak for the other campaigns as of yet but i'd imagine that they don't get anywhere near as close
The game becoming more action oriented made sense in universe until Resi 6 came out, then it was just fucking stupid. It makes sense that the characters would go from cautious, terrified and generally unprepared, to what they were around Resi 5 (apart from Chris being a human shaped muscle). The infections they've dealt with are know more understood and they have ideas of how to deal with the infected and such. There's less mystery more cleanup.
But it would be nice to go back to a more slower paced, horror themed Resi game for a change.
Given how Capcom is now a days, I wouldn't put it past them to have it end up that "more focused on horror" ends up something dumb. Like pretty much Resident Evil 6, only you go against Ancient Horrors rather than zombies and infected people. Or like, slapping monster masks on normal enemies and expecting THAT to equal "horror". Or something along the lines of taking place after the epic conclusion of a RE game that never happened. Chris and Co. have to survive the "horror" of finding and maintaining regular, non combat jobs.
EDIT: the first example i made is meant to be that while you go up against actual monsters rather than bio engineered creatures, its still Resident Evil 6. As in you are far from helpless.
I'm surprised that the only spinoffs they've done for Resident Evil lately was, of course, an outsourced one and a separate Mercenaries release. (I count Revelations as a main title, number or not.) I mean, it's Capcom we're talking about here; you'd think that with a series as popular as RE has been lately, they'd of churned out more side-games or even try giving something like Outbreak a 'modern' once over, but instead they throw a gigantic, triple-A budget into 6 like it ain't no thang.
Then again, Capcom's like that sporadic greedy uncle that runs a successful business, but is a complete and unpredictable asshole about it with only a few moments of respite and niceness.
I honestly haven't really liked any of the later games. 4 broke the series in my opinion. Scrapped the traditional zombies for the goofy parasite things and turned into an action games of sorts. Basically, whatever they're doing needs to be nothing like 4-6 and it will be good. The series really needs to switch tp more of a survival focus rather than an action or story focus. Playing gun toting zombie killing machines is one thing that has caused the series to become rather dull. They need to, for lack of a better comparison, adopt somewhat of a Silent Hill formula, most of the game is spent exploring and sneaking and searching rather than shoot shoot shoot all the time.

I'm pleased by the news but I'm pretty much expecting what you just said. Capcom's clearly forgotten what 'horror' means as of Resi 4
I liked RE6, I understand it's not traditional to the franchise but things change. As the virus becomes more global things begin to get chaotic, it's not going to stay horror forever. Yeah the game was over the top on many occasions and many parts of it made no sense, but I don't play games for them to make sense. Not usually, anyway.

"Resident Evil 7! You play as Chris! Checkout clerk for a local supermarket. Chris struggles settling into his new job after a long tour combating biological terrorists. Now you get the experience of trying not to crush a customers eggs with your freakishly muscle-bound fingers!"
I'd play it.
ResiEvil definitely needs a return to form; good horror and puzzle-solving but with the same combat interface as ResiEvil4, albeit with the action-movie aesthetic dialled back a few notches.
Leave the over-the-top monster design to the ResiEvil movies.
likely. eh.

Nope, that's a deal breaker. The dark side of the game I suppose :v:

They showed potential with revelations
Revelations was pretty good. If they go towards that route instead of RE6 gameplay then we should have something to look forward to.
It still had pretty shit pacing though.
If Jake doesn't punch a dinosaur to death in the next one it's gonna' flop.
I liked RE6, but I haven't played anything before RE5 so I'm not too familiar with the old series. The best parts in RE6 were definitely the horror parts though. The Chinese market in the Leon campaign being a nice example. Building a game around those scenarios would be step in the right direction.

I don't suppose it's very likely we'll go back to the gameplay style of the original games is it?
It isn't hard to make a decent horror game, these guys are just incompetent as fuck.
If they made a resident evil like the old ones with updated controls it'd be great.
I remember resident as if I played it yesterday, the eerie music and the sound of that zombie eating that dude then it plays that cinematic of him turning around. I slept a couple of nights with the light on after playing that as a kid.
To be honest, they should of done this sooner. It's still good though I'm glad they've finally got the message.
I'll believe it when I see it.

They just went the completely wrong way to try to appeal to the western market.
