Gilroy police officers fired multiple shots Sunday at a man who they say jumped into a patrol car and drove the vehicle in reverse, nearly striking one of the officers. Kenneth Aguero, 31, of Gilroy also attempted to remove locked guns from the police car during an altercation Sunday afternoon that began at a towing yard, according to a release issued by Gilroy police. Officers also used pepper spray, Tasers and their batons to force Aguero out of the police car, according to the release. Aguero was not hit by any of the gunshots and was arrested on suspicion of theft of an emergency vehicle and assault on police. A Gilroy police spokesman could not immediately be reached for comment this morning. According to the release, Aguero went to Marx Towing about 3:45 p.m. to pick up his vehicle, which had been towed Wednesday by Gilroy police for blocking the roadway on Trailblazer Way. The tow company's employees told police Aguero became agitated when he was not allowed to pick up his vehicle without having the proper authorization or paperwork. The employees called police to report that Aguero was agitated and belligerent. When officers arrived, Aguero was inside the tow yard's storage facility. Police say Aguero ignored their commands and resisted attempts to take him into custody. Police say Aguero continued to resist after being pepper sprayed, shot with a Taser and struck with a baton. Police say Aguero ran from the officers, jumped into a parked police car and attempted to remove the firearms that were locked inside. Police say Aguero ignored orders to exit the vehicle, jammed it in reverse and sped backward, nearly striking an officer. The officer fired several shots, according to police. Another officer fired shots in an effort to stop Aguero, who was fleeing in the police car, according to the release. The car came to a stop across the street in a grassy area, according to police. Aguero ignored orders to get out of the car, according to police. Aguero again tried to remove the guns from the police car. It wasn't until a police dog arrived at the scene that Aguero was forcibly removed from the car and arrested. Aguero was treated at a hospital for moderate wounds from the police dog and baton and then booked into Santa Clara County Main Jail. Kenneth Aguero is like the second coming of Rasputin.
