On January 13, Microsoft's mainstream support for Windows 7 Service Pack (SP) 1 ends.
Nobody panic. This does not mean Microsoft is going to stop issuing security fixes for Windows 7 SP1 tomorrow. Or anytime soon, for that matter, unlike some of its competitors (cough, Google, cough).
"Mainstream support" is the period during which Microsoft provides for free security and non-security updates and telephone support for its products. "Extended support" -- the period during which Microsoft continues to provide for free security updates for products -- doesn't end until January 14, 2020 for Windows 7 SP1.
They're continuing to provide security updates for another 5 years, no reason to panic. That's 10 years of support
Hard to believe that 7 is over 5 years old already.
And nothing at all changes.
Well it was released 5 years ago so I'm not surprised.
Whatever, just as long as Win10's not too far away, it shouldn't be too much a problem.
Eh, to be honest, despite the Y-N-Y-N pattern we've got going, I really don't have high hopes for W10.
If you're the kind of person that calls Microsoft for tech support, you're probably the kind of person that already has Win8 on your crummy HP computer from Costco.

why? have you even tried win8.1?

What? This has nothing to do with calling microsoft and having windows 8 is not a bad thing, unless you for some reason really hate the interface
As long as I don't have to install any windows starting with an 8...
You'll be fucked when we get 30 years of Windows 80 through Windows 89.
why? have you even tried win8.1?
i switched to it a few weeks ago and now im constantly using 7 out of 8GB of my RAM even when i dont have anything open
get windows 8 they said its better they said
Windows 8.1 is great I don't see why people hate it so much... I prefer it over 7
Windows 7 is the 2000/XP of our time
Whatever, just as long as Win10's not too far away, it shouldn't be too much a problem.
Unless windows 10 sucks.
Windows xp was great. Vista wasn't. So a lot of people clung to xp (like myself). Then 7 came out and it was great, so I switched to 7. Then 8 came out and it wasn't great, so I downgraded to 7. Now if 10 comes out and it sucks and has more metro shit, I may be SOL until they make a good OS
Cool. Doesn't change anything for me, though.

There's never a reason to panic. Microsoft cutting support off doesn't magically make your OS stop working or set fire to your underpants or anything. W7 will tick on quite happily even after extended support stops, provided the hardware it's on is still functioning properly.

don't bother, at this point it's like trying to change someone's religious beliefs

It was hyperbole, obviously. Though it's generally not recommended to use an operating system that is no longer receiving security patches if you're doing anything valuable on your computer
Windows 8 is literally a faster 7 and Windows 10 will literally be a faster 8. We can quit bitching about updated design aspects and welcome a far superior OS now.
I'll probably end up using Windows 10 even if it sucks so I won't have to worry about upgrading when they stop releasing updates in 10 years.
I'm not really that huge of a computer enthusiast compared to when I was younger and played video games on it everyday so the OS doesn't really matter to me as long it's not like Vista.

Maybe one day people will stop actually using this "pattern" that they've made up.
We can only hope.
The people saying W8 is good have clearly never used the technical preview. Going from that back to 8 is like going from 7 to XP. It isn't even that much different, there are just so many little things about 8 that make it a chore to use.
What? This has nothing to do with calling microsoft and having windows 8 is not a bad thing, unless you for some reason really hate the interface
Did you accidentally forget the article? Microsoft isn't supporting Win7 over the phone anymore, but it doesn't matter because the kind of person that needs phone support probably already uses Win8.
Also I really don't understand why people block out us folks that just don't jive with Win8's awkward forced implementation of the Metro UI. We don't like it, and the marginal performance benefits don't outweigh the fact that we hate the UI. If you like it, more power to you, but demanding that we "get over it" and jam the Win8 dick in our mouths is about as obnoxious as Mac users, especially when Win7 is still supported and will be for 5 more years...
Is windows vista still supported?

When you're literally having a technical issue with Windows 8:
i switched to it a few weeks ago and now im constantly using 7 out of 8GB of my RAM even when i dont have anything open
get windows 8 they said its better they said
I don't think your experience should be taken as what most people can expect. I generally sit at around 2.5/8GB, and it's only when Chrome fucks up severely that I get anywhere near the 8GB.
I'm assuming you mean the Win 8 tech preview, and yeah, I haven't tried it yet - I'll probably wait for the consumer preview.
Is windows vista still supported?
Extended support ends on April 11, 2017
Mainstream support ended almost 3 years ago.

That isn't the reason I dislike W8. It mostly boils down to full screen "apps" pulling you out of the desktop paired with a severe lack of customisation/settings (aka dumbing down), something W10 fixes.
Is windows vista still supported?
Only in extended phase, with just over 2 years left in the tank before its legacy dies for good.

There's nothing awkward or forced about windows 8. It's honestly time to admit that even if you don't like it, it's not a bad UI. It's fine to not like something, people don't like things that other people like all the time. But saying it's awkward and forced is completely goofy, and there was a lot of research that went into the changes from 7 to 8. I was a little bit offput by the start screen at first too but I got used to it and now I much prefer the organized menu to icons cluttering my desktop
