The folks at Fraunhofer IPMS have done it! After years of tireless research and promises of Borg-like eyewear, the group has delivered a prototype of the world's first bidirectional, eye-tracking OLED microdisplay (got all that?) at SID 2011. The rig is much like a monocle, except with a transparent OLED display inside, which overlays digital information on top of the reflected light that usually hits your eyeballs. What's more, there are integrated photodetectors inside and special software to monitor the direction of your gaze, allowing you to interact with your newfound augmented reality using only the flick of an eyeball. Fraunhofer foresees joggers taking in movies while out for a run, which sounds more than just a little dangerous. We, on the other hand, envision a world in which the first thing anyone does upon meeting someone new is discreetly check their relationship status on Facebook -- finally fulfilling the social network's full creep potential. One more pic and the poorly translated PR after the break. Only really useful if it projects the image as if it were 30 feet in front of you, else you'll look like you have a lazy eye and have to swap eye dominance from whichever eye is your dominant to the one that isn't

If they do make it, I want a version that's the size and shape of a monocle, so I can look cool with my tDCS top hat and graphene paper armoured tuxedo. The ultimate gentleman! (sans the hundreds of lit cigarettes in my mouth)
Left eye is dominate.
not mine, it's the reason I have to wear glasses. oh and inb4 scouter reference.
I don't think the dominate eye is what makes you wear glasses or not, I have the right eye as the dominate one and my vision is perfect.
Not impressed. Not yet. :colbert:
They still need to make it smaller. But this is fucking awesome anyway.

About freaking time. It's 2011! We should have had flying cars and pizzas you must hydrate to eat!
This does look like something would use though, i would get it to mark out who i do and don't like...
It's pissing me off I have to repost this over and over while they haven't yet fulfilled my craving for more information, but This doesn't have eye tracking, but it's bi-directional too, and they already have it working. It also seems like much more affordable solution. [editline]21st April 2011[/editline] It's also over half a year since they published info about this, so I don't know how the new thing is "worlds first" in anything else than tracking the eye and using OLED display specifically, the general idea and product is there for ages, problem is that not a single one was widely available so far.
Not impressed. I'll be impressed when I can communicate to others in real time using only my thoughts, whilst information is projected onto my retina (or simply plugged into my optic nerve). Oh DARPA, how you've spoiled me.
I'll be impressed when this has a fully built in camera, and is operated with voice commands/thought trance... Then, I'll be impressed.
Cool idea and all, but I still think a touchscreen sleeve is much more practical.
Cool idea and all, but I still think a touchscreen sleeve is much more practical.
Let's have both.
They look almost like these:
Can I use it to track peoples power levels?
About freaking time. It's 2011! We should have had flying cars and pizzas you must hydrate to eat!
We've had flying cars for a long time now, they're just too noisy, unsafe and expensive
I can't help but think how cool it will be when you can just look at something and blink/click a button instead of using a mouse. Can't wait to see how it'll effect FPSs, too. I know that (Arma?) had that support for moving your head to look around while keeping the gun forward, but just imagine when you can look directly at a person's head in a game to get headshots. Hell, it'll be kind of like after playing through assassin's creed and being trained to see how to climb buildings in real life, but instead of looking at walls you look at people's heads. Man, I just found the cure for people who don't make eye contact
This is another one of those things you hear about which resembles a HUD which you go "AWESOME!" to then never hear anything of it again :smith:
Do want.
Now make robots.

Where's the Deus Ex joke?
[img_thumb]http://images.wikia.com/terminator/images/d/dc/T-888_HUD.jpg[/img_thumb] Do want.
But I don't want to be limited to only shades of red
Left eye is dominate.
Nope, I'm right eye dominant. I'm also ambidextrous, but ocular dominance doesn't really have much to do with that from what I understand.
I don't think the dominate eye is what makes you wear glasses or not, I have the right eye as the dominate one and my vision is perfect.
This. :EDIT: For anyone who's curious about determining ocular dominance, follow the instructions here.
