So I just saw this on eBay: http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/AMD-Athlon-II-X4-Quad-Core-Motherboard-Bundle-2GB-DDR2-/160485410546?pt=UK_Motherboards_CPUs&hash=item255dad06f2#ht_890wt_1137 My current specs are pretty shitty, a Core 2 Duo, 4GB's of RAM and an HD4550 graphics card. The PSU is, iirc, 350W. I remember a while back asking for some advice on upgrading my graphics card, and I completely left out my PSU output, meaning that the card that you guys recommended couldn't be used on my PC. It would've been pretty easy to just change the PSU if it was a custom build, but instead it's a crappy Dell prebuilt, and it has all kinds of messed up ways to hitch your PSU up to your case, and uses some sort of different connector that will only power a Dell motherboard, so upgrading that was out of the question. I was thinking, if I could scrape up some cash to buy a cheap case, that mobo+CPU pack I found on eBay (I'm still not sure if that thing is terrible, I don't know much about these things), and a better PSU, would I notice a difference? I would obviously keep my current graphics card, my current hard drive and stuff. Would this be a complete waste of money? Should I just save up some more money untill I can pretty much build a new computer?
Waste of money. Save up.
Waste of money. Save up.
Agreed.
If you got that bundle you would need a new PSU and case which would be another £80 at least [editline]09:00PM[/editline] and probably some new RAM
I already have the RAM, and I guess you guys are right. I'll just save up some more so I can buy something better.
Probably not DDR3 RAM though
Probably not DDR3 RAM though
I've got 4gigs of DDR2 in my PC now, i have some more sticks somewhere..
DDR2 is not old enough to be outdated yet.
I still wouldn't buy a new DDR2 motherboard now though
It's good if your on an extremely low budget.
Not really, that motherboard is a piece of shit. He'd be better off getting these: CPU:http://www.scan.co.uk/Products/AMD-Athlon-II-X4-630-Quad-Core-S-AM3-28GHz-2MB-Cache-HT-4000MHz-95W-Retail Motherboard:http://www.scan.co.uk/Products/Asus-M4A77-AMD-770-AM3-PCI-E-(x16)-DDR2-1200(OC)-SATA-3Gb-s-SATA-RAID-ATX And the motherboard accepts DDR2 RAM. You'll still need a new case and PSU (as the ones from your old prebuilt won't be standard ATX and probably won't accept a new motherboard). If you're on a budget get these Case:http://www.scan.co.uk/products/Coolermaster-Elite-334-Black-Midi-Tower-Case-w-o-PSU PSU:http://www.scan.co.uk/products/550W-Antec-Basiq-Plus-Modular-120mm-Fan-ATX12V-version-22-PSU [editline]03:19PM[/editline] Or maybe this if you're feeling really cheap: http://www.ebuyer.com/product/220863

However, would this have no point? Would I see any difference in games by just upgrading to a quad core? A bloody expensive quad core, at that. (£204 to upgrade to it)
The athlon 635 isn't a very big step up from a core2 CPU (disregarding the extra cores). A couple of years ago it would have been worth it just because the AM3 socket offered more upgrade ability, however now the AM3 socket is about to be replaced. If you are desperate for better performance the get a phenom 955 which would be another £50. If you can wait the new bulldozer cores will be out next year, so you'll have time to save up for a better one
Well, I guess I'll just be saving up then. Thanks for the help anyway guys.
