House Committee Votes to Require Women to Register for Draft
WASHINGTON — The House Armed Services Committee approved a measure Wednesday requiring women to register for the military draft, a move that comes just a few months after the Defense Department lifted all gender-based restrictions on front-line combat units.
In a twist that presages how contentious further debate may be, the author of the amendment voted against his own measure. It passed the committee by a vote of 32-30.
Rep. Duncan Hunter, R-Calif., a former Marine who served three combat tours in Iraq and Afghanistan, doesn’t support drafting women into combat and he’s opposed to opening infantry and special operations positions to women. He said he offered the measure to trigger a discussion about how the Pentagon’s decision in December to rescind gender restrictions on military service failed to consider whether the exclusion on drafting women also should be lifted.
That’s a call for Congress to make, Hunter said, not the executive branch. “I think we should make this decision,” he said. “It’s the families that we represent who are affected by this.”
...
Rep. Jackie Speier, D-Calif., said she supported Hunter’s measure.
“I actually think if we want equality in this country, if we want women to be treated precisely like men are treated and that they should not be discriminated against, we should be willing to support a universal conscription,” she said.
Glad to see progress being made on this.
I'd hate to see anybody drafted, but this is a pretty legit move for the army.

Yup, time to make an equal move for the draft and then make a full-force effort to abolish it.

the draft is one of those things you'd rather have and not need instead of a thing you need and don't have.
in ww2 it took a long time to get the draft back up and running, way too long for a situation that requires having a process in place
I believe women have a place in the military, but it isn't in combat. Stupid political correctness and screams for "equality" have forced the military into a corner, approving women for positions like infantry is a horrendous mistake.
why, tho
why, tho
Because they consistently perform far worse than all male units.
Because they consistently perform far worse than all male units.
You have any sources to back up that claim?

Yes.

And you don't think that's a generalization, or perhaps the result of women not being in combat for as long as men?
It's like if I let a few black people into combat and they all died - it would be unfair to say, "Black people just can't fight."
Why not just get rid of it for everyone

I will not die for this country.
Yes.

That's the Marines though. Only the best of the best make it in the Marines, this is about the army, you don't get drafted into the Marine Corp
I will not die for this country.
Then you don't deserve to live in it.

Fair enough, can't find one for the army atm.

I don't really get why you are conceding that.

Only the best is irrelevant. If the selection is unbiased that still shows the all male squads performed better.
Then you don't deserve to live in it.
hate to repeat myself but
why, tho

Because I don't have any evidence to back up my claim at the moment?

I refuse to die for the pigfuckers in Congress that sell the American population to the furnace that is capitalism and the upper class while people delude themselves into thinking that our government in any way stands for freedom, ethics, and its own citizens. America is not something to be proud of, and I am not represented, so why should I die for a group of people that are completely out of touch and view me as the "other" that can go fight for him?
I'd only enter the fight if everyone in Congress joined me. Women being allowed to join only makes me feel better because they aren't treated as being weaker, but it doesn't detract from the problem that the draft poses. America doesn't deserve a draft.
Because I don't have any evidence to back up my claim at the moment?
But the point he made was irrelevant.
If selection is not biased toward either gender being allowed at a higher/lower standard then troops should be of relatively equal skill. But the study showed the groups performed differently.

Spare the edge, you should be fucking grateful you live in one of the most civilized countries around.
Yup, time to make an equal move for the draft and then make a full-force effort to abolish it.
i honestly like the idea US had decades ago where civillians decide to go to war via vote, if you vote yes then your drafted.
hate to repeat myself but

Maybe if your country has treated you like dog shit you shouldn't. Otherwise you should probably owe it some degree of loyalty.
I will not die for this country.
If it comes to full-on mobilization in this century you wouldn't be expected to die for this or that country, you might just have to go and fight for your family and shit you hold dear. Because that'll have to be some serious bad times coming for any bigger country to strain its economy with mobilization.
What actually are the reasons for keeping this?
For one, the government already knows who all the citizens are through social security and income tax (and drivers licenses, medicare (or whatever it's called), etc). And for two, registering yourself is a hugely invasive thing. Why are Americans fine with this but if the government proposed mandatory registration of guns (which are inanimate objects without feelings for those playing along at home) there'd probably be riots?
I will not die for this country.
I'm not quite sure how I feel about this morally but I'm leanings towards that kinda being fucked up, we all benefit from living in society and should be willing to give back to it if need be.

That was a marine study, not an army study. If I can find one for the army though I'd return to my previous position. It's most likely similar simply due to physiology but I'm not going to argue out of my ass.
Because they consistently perform far worse than all male units.
Not all combat roles have the same requirements as the marines
Also the training process has been optimized for men, it's going to take a while before they get the regiments, workouts and other stuff optimized for women too

Sounds good to me. I don't really feel at fault for the terrible foreign policy that the United States has. I don't want to be the clean up crew for the military's bad decisions what with the collateral damage through bombing and previously terrible treatment of foreigners in the Iraq war.
Then you don't deserve to live in it.
"Everyone talks about dying for their country, but never about killing for it"
If someone attempts a land-based invasion of the US, then fine, I'll fight.
But no, I will not go out and do it. If someone else takes up the call, kudos and respect, but I felt very miffed about being forced to sign up for the draft. We spend too much on doing so little.

You live in one of the most peaceful times in human history. Just be happy you aren't shoveling pig shit for your feudal overlord. The government gave you an Education. You'd be a meandering fuck incapable of forming a coherent sentence without the big bad government.

this answers nothing
why should i have any loyalty to my country whatsoever
