A species of African rhino last seen in 2006 is now officially extinct, according to the world's largest conservation network. The latest review of animals and plants by the International Union for Conservation of Nature found the Western Black rhino has been totally wiped out. Conservationists have blamed poachers and lack of conservation while warning that other rhinos could follow.
http://www.dailymail.co.uk/news/article-2490777/Western-Black-rhino-officially-extinct-Northern-White-Javan-rhinos-follow-unless-conservationists-warn.html http://science.time.com/2013/11/06/western-black-rhino-declared-extinct/?iid=tl-main-mostpop2 :(
Always depressing news.
wasn't it declared extinct back in 2011 though? [editline]8th November 2013[/editline] wait i'm dumb
Wiping out an entire sub species for something as temporary as money, damn shame.
Hey remember that organization that said killing a single rhino and donating the proceeds to breeding them would help? Yeah.
Another victory in the war on animals.
We started writing an essay on an endangered animal of our choice a couple of weeks ago, a girl in my class picked this one. Welp.
Seeing that the Russians are attempting to make a mamoth live, i am pretty sure we will think of something
Seeing that the Russians are attempting to make a mamoth live, i am pretty sure we will think of something
Black paint will do.
what makes me sad, is that I never got to see it alive, now... that chance is lost. Fucking humans.
wasn't it declared extinct back in 2011 though? [editline]8th November 2013[/editline] wait i'm dumb
You are right. http://www.iucnredlist.org/details/39319/0
what makes me sad, is that I never got to see it alive, now... that chance is lost. Fucking humans.
I agree. Fucking humans, they ought to deport the lot of them. Them and their bloody dogs.
:suicide: Edit: Seriously, that's how I feel right now.
Fucking Chinese and their homeopathic medicine. I wish they weren't so superstitious but no they have to create the market for the poaching oh rhino horns
Fucking Chinese and their homeopathic medicine. I wish they weren't so superstitious but no they have to create the market for the poaching oh rhino horns
And what's worse is that Traditional Chinese Medicine was on the way out until Mao, having purged the docs, decided to rehabilitate it in order to make up for the shortfall.
Hey remember that organization that said killing a single rhino and donating the proceeds to breeding them would help? Yeah.
That's for a subspecies that still has (few) thousands of specimen in the free wilderness.
You are right. http://www.iucnredlist.org/details/39319/0
motherfuck Where the hell did all these articles show up from then
Good news is that there isn't a million years or so separating us from its DNA. So as suggested, I'd assume we can eventually clone them back.
Good news is that there isn't a million years or so separating us from its DNA. So as suggested, I'd assume we can eventually clone them back.
Literally came in to say that. I really hope something can be done in future with technology.
wasn't it declared extinct back in 2011 though? [editline]8th November 2013[/editline] wait i'm dumb
You are correct.
Fucking Chinese and their homeopathic medicine. I wish they weren't so superstitious but no they have to create the market for the poaching oh rhino horns
Alot of the problem is just stupid luxury trinkets that people want.
Are there any megafauna left that aren't endangered or on the verge of extinction? I can't think of many large, non-domesticated animals left in the wild in considerable numbers.
Wiping out an entire sub species for something as temporary as money, damn shame.
they think rhino horn in China can cure cancer.... I think that's even worse of a reason to poach these guys to death
Fucking Chinese and their homeopathic medicine. I wish they weren't so superstitious but no they have to create the market for the poaching oh rhino horns
Homeopathy doesn't use rhino horn or anything alike and it has nothing to do with China.
Are there any megafauna left that aren't endangered or on the verge of extinction? I can't think of many large, non-domesticated animals left in the wild in considerable numbers.
Technically Elephants and Hippos are only vulnerable and are not yet considered endangered. But they're not in the best shape either.
Homeopathy doesn't use rhino horn or anything alike and it has nothing to do with China.
Traditional Chinese medicine doesn't use a significant amount of rhino horn for medicine as much as they use the horn to carve ornamental cups, which allegedly hold "medicinal value (aphrosidiac) and the ability to identify poisons", which science has proven to be bupkiss. Rhino horn is seen in countries like Vietnam and China as something of a status symbol of wealth. This is also the reason that elephants are slowly approaching the endangered list, especially with regards to the prolific level of poaching for their tusks, most of which end up in China. While this isn't the only cause, it does play a significant role.
FUCK!
historically speaking, it was the intensive use of animal parts of any nature that drove so many species to extinction over the years of mankind's development. A good example of intensive use of animal parts in the Cro-Magnon community can be observed in the site of Dolni Vestonice at Czechoslovakia. 4 Cro-Magnon clans gathered there and made a great living as mammoth hunters - they used the flesh for food, the hides and skins for clothing, bedding, etc. the sinews and bones were carved into tools, and the biggest bones and best hides were used to build their huts. This aside done, the problem with the use of animal parts in medicine and for their ornamental or supposed supernatural powers was belief. If you believed enough in something, even if it didn't work out that way, it wouldn't be immediately dismissed out of hand, played for laughs even as a glitch. Medicine and magic were so intertwined in the ancient times that it's survived even to this day. Belief is a strange thing, it can cause a lot of trouble if improperly channeled. And it's always a loss when any form of animal goes extinct - everything has its place in the wide world and the circle we call life.
Hey remember that organization that said killing a single rhino and donating the proceeds to breeding them would help? Yeah.
Do you recall that was a different species entirely? Of course it wasn't going to help this one.
We need to figure out how to clone and then save these animals. Take blood samples of the endangered species for cloning purposes should they go extinct.
