• German push to ban sale of combustion-engine cars by 2030 wins cross-party support
A proposal to stop sales of new combustion-engine cars by 2030 has gained cross-party support in Germany's Bundesrat, the country's upper house of parliament, Der Spiegel reported. German lawmakers should urge their counterparts in Brussels to push incentives for only zero-emission vehicles to be registered by 2030, the weekly news magazine said, citing a decision taken in a Bundesrat meeting. "If the Paris agreement to curb climate-warming emissions is to be taken seriously, no new combustion engine cars should be allowed on roads after 2030," it quoted Greens party lawmaker Oliver Krischer as saying. A switch to sales of only zero-emission cars puts thousands of German auto industry jobs at risk since the powertrain of an electric car requires only a tenth of the staff to be assembled when compared with a combustion-engined equivalent, which needs more workers to assemble cylinders, spark plugs, and gearboxes.
http://www.reuters.com/article/us-autos-emissions-germany-idUSKCN1280G7 short article
As long as prices come down and choice goes up I don't see the issue, as long as people aren't priced out of buying a car and you can still buy used.
You sir are a ninja.. :suicide:
So uh Are they gonna pay for electric cars for me? Cause they're still WAY more expensive than regular cars while offering nowhere near the performance. I'm all for switching to electrics but presently it's simply unaffordable for me and many others.

The cost will come down and the performance will probably be equivalent or better.

Thats "reasonable" just not "cheap". 15 years from now who knows what the market will look like

2030 sounds like a reasonable year, as long as they continue to allow the existing cars to be used.
Hopefully this doesn't include limited production cars
I mean I'd totally sign on to an electric, self-driving car service (or bus), which 100% will happen soon/already started in Sweden.
We need a company producing electric vehicles whose gimmick is being cheap and reliable. None of the infotainment shit that barely anyone uses, none of the heated seats or super surround sound and other shit nobody understands. Options for window cranks and non-power locks and mirrors. Drive down the cost of an EV considerably since other than the basics like radio, ac & heating, etc all a manufacturer has to really worry about is the powertrain itself. People are going to bitch and complain about it but I honestly see it as the fastest way to getting it out there and cutting down emissions especially in a world market where the poor get poorer and the rich get richer. There's probably other shit I'm not looking at but this is still one way of driving down the cost.
i just hope we have enough materials to build the batteries that will be required for this

But they went from limited production -> luxury car -> average new car, so that they could raise capital. Unless one of the big manufacturers backs it then any new company is probably going to struggle to raise the capital to build cheap EVs right off the bat. To build cheap EVs you need your own massive battery plants (Tesla Gigafactory), as well as huge investments into R&D.

Someone call 911 and have the police go to Test-E-Cull's house to see if he's okay
Someone call 911 and have the police go to Test-E-Cull's house to see if he's okay
Well he says he doesn't buy new cars so it's alright. And if this does go through, neither will I past 2030 to be honest. Maybe just a grocery-getter.
I'm going to miss these.

EVs make sound too though:

And sound from an ICE is not comparable to the cabin sound in an electric car, which is wind noise and a faint whirr
Ford pumps fake V8 sound out of the speakers for their V6 engines too. Not an EV issue alone.

Welp, that's another country off my tourism list. Oh well. I was looking forward to getting a chance to experience the Nurburgring the way it was meant to be experienced, too...
Because ICE manufacturers have been pumping out fake engine sounds for ages and it doesn't seem to deter people.
You say that as it's some prevalent thing but it's really not. Sure, there are cases, but not to such an extent. [editline]8th October 2016[/editline]
Welp, that's another country off my tourism list. Oh well. I was looking forward to getting a chance to experience the Nurburgring the way it was meant to be experienced, too...
You'll still be able to visit it with an ICE car if this goes through. After all, it's merely halting production of new ICE cars in Germany past 2030, which would mean no ICE BMWs or Audis past 2030. Nurburgring is completely unrelated to that. Besides, if this does pull through in Germany, I'll be extremely surprised if it doesn't spread across Europe and eventually the US and Japan too.
There's no way these combustion-engine car bans won't end up a absolute disaster.
There's no way these combustion-engine car bans won't end up a absolute disaster.
How so? As long as countries implement proper legislation on allowing home chargers then it shouldn't be an issue with the rate that EVs are advancing. When Tesla release the non-performance version of their 100 kWh pack it will have a higher range than my petrol car.
2030 sounds like a reasonable year, as long as they continue to allow the existing cars to be used.
ban sale means banning the sale
There's no way these combustion-engine car bans won't end up a absolute disaster.
in 2030? What else does your crystal ball show?
Because ICE manufacturers have been pumping out fake engine sounds for ages and it doesn't seem to deter people.
for ages being a few recent models from bmw and maybe 2 other or so manufacturers
