US Marine sniper unit photographed with 'Nazi SS' flag The US scout sniper team adapted the SS logo to fit their unit flag A US Marine scout sniper unit in Afghanistan posed for a photo in front of a flag resembling the logo of the Nazi SS, the Marine Corps says. In a statement, a Marine spokesman said use of the SS symbol was not acceptable, and that the Corps had now addressed the issue. The spokesman did not specify what action had been taken. Marines in the September 2010 photo, taken in Sangin, Afghanistan, are no longer in that unit, he added. The photo was brought to the attention of a Marine inspector general in November 2011, and investigations then revealed which unit the men were serving in. The inspector general found there was no intent on the part of the Marines to identify themselves with the SS. An investigation found the symbol was meant to identify the Marines as scout snipers, but that it was still unacceptable, the Associated Press reported. "Certainly, the use of the 'SS runes' is not acceptable and Scout Snipers have been addressed concerning this issue," Marine Corps spokesman Capt Gregory Wolf told the BBC. No fun allowed.
So they use a cool slanted font for themselves the "Scout Snipers" a widely available font at that, and just because the SS used it they get bitchy about it? Never change america.
I don't really see the problem with this. If they're just using it to identify themselves as scout snipers, and not nazi SS, What's the problem?
fucking commie nazis are at it again
If the SS flag means scout sniper then why should it offend anyone? Because it was used by an enemy in a war 70 years ago? Get over it. The flag looks cool.
I don't really see the problem with this. If they're just using it to identify themselves as scout snipers, and not nazi SS, What's the problem?
The symbol is ridiculously noticeable. If I wanted to find a flag for my "Scout Snipers" unit I wouldn't pick a bloody SS flag then make the argument, "well you know what I only thought the double lightning bolts looked cool because they could also be seen as a double S as in Scout Sniper lol" Don't play dumb.
So they use a cool slanted font for themselves the "Scout Snipers" a widely available font at that, and just because the SS used it they get bitchy about it? Never change america.
could still turn into a political shitstorm
Holy shit Why does this matter?
So they use a cool slanted font for themselves the "Scout Snipers" a widely available font at that, and just because the SS used it they get bitchy about it? Never change america.
It looks exactly the same as the SS logo, don't be so bloody daft.
Holy shit Why does this matter?
Dumb sensationalist bullshit.
Who cares? It's a good design
Holy shit Why does this matter?
Because there are people that are bored and have nothing else to do.
This was in the news months ago. It's commonplace in militaries to take the flags of defeated enemies. The SS no longer exist, the marines bearing this flag is more of an insult toward the SS than anything.
Your right it was common place to pose with pictures of a recently captured standard of a rival unit or regiment. Not say a couple of decades later with your national flag above it. Christ.
As a military unit of a civilized country you don't want to be identified with the SS. Sure you could use the letters 'SS', but the shown design is a bit too close: So just change the font and save everyone the trouble.
No matter if it was meant to mean Scout Snipers any soldier should know that it is associated with the Nazi SS and avoid it like the plague in order to prevent a storm. Edit: Ninja'd
Seems like a bizarre coincidence, unless I'm giving them too much credit.
I don't blame them, the stylized "SS" is damn sexy.
hey guys swastika is in Buddhism all Buddhists are nazis lets complain
hey guys swastika is in Buddhism all Buddhists are nazis lets complain
You got it backwards, all Nazis are Buddhists since it came first therefore we must complain about Buddhism
You got it backwards, all Nazis are Buddhists since it came first therefore we must complain about Buddhism
i dont care im american all buddhists are nazis lets complain
If America didn't want to be identified as having similarities with the SS, why do most American politicians wear suits designed by Hugo Boss, The main designer for the SS uniforms?
If America didn't want to be identified as having similarities with the SS, why do most American politicians wear suits designed by Hugo Boss, The main designer for the SS uniforms?
Nazi uniforms were damn fine. It's a shame they have to be associated with the whole Nazi thing.
hey guys swastika is in Buddhism all Buddhists are nazis lets complain
Again 100% correct, however I don't think the SS symbol was ever used in such a manner. It's more of a pseudo-military/racial symbol used during the reign of the third Reich.
I think the title should be "Media does it again" There's a person reading this somewhere saying "I'm offended by this" and I want to punch them.
If America didn't want to be identified as having similarities with the SS, why do most American politicians wear suits designed by Hugo Boss, The main designer for the SS uniforms?
The same could be said with Mercedes-Benz and Porsche. Also we funded the Nazi party so who gives a shit if we use their flag. Unless the Marines start offering free showers to the Taliban then let them be.
I think the title should be "Media does it again" There's a person reading this somewhere saying "I'm offended by this" and I want to punch them.
Offended ? no. However if I was an American or involved with the Marines or the American military in general there would be questions and eyebrows raised.
Nazi uniforms were damn fine. It's a shame they have to be associated with the whole Nazi thing.
The Nazis (Germans in general) had some great shit, it just happens to be that their leader and their political ideology were both fucking insane [editline]9th February 2012[/editline]
Offended ? no. However if I was an American or involved with the Marines or the American military in general there would be questions and eyebrows raised.
I'm American and I just find it funny.
If the SS flag means scout sniper then why should it offend anyone? Because it was used by an enemy in a war 70 years ago? Get over it. The flag looks cool.
If it was just the symbol for the Wermacht, then it wouldn't be such a big deal. but the SS were notorious for committing war crimes. The SS is well known to be monsters and commit atrocities, they executed POW's, hunted Jews, and slaughtered civilians. Don't play dumb and act like they didn't choose the 2 lightning bolt S's because it's the symbol of the SS.
wow, the SS should sue them for copyright infringement
