Martin Aircraft Company has been developing a jetpack for years, and has performed some successful dummy test flights, but a human pilot was not involved. Now, the company has received a permit for a manned test flight, one of the last steps before a general consumer release.
The jetpack is a simple construction relative to what you might think a jetpack would be composed of, yet it still functions like the jetpack in your imagination. Rather than anti-grav science fiction technology, the Martin jetpack is composed of two cylinders with large propulsion fans that flank the central seating area. The frame is made of carbon-fiber, and it employs a rocket-propelled parachute. Building a jetpack isn’t as easy as slapping two huge fans onto chair sounds, though. Martin dedicated a significant amount of time tweaking the build, such as the precise position of the jetpack ducts.
The personal vehicle uses a V4 piston engine, can reach a top speed of 63mph, carries around five gallons of gasoline, and its range is limited to around 32 miles. So, that’s about a half hour of flight time.
Do you have to be a millionaire to own one though
How would they regulate the traffic of jetpacks?

Imagine flying across the edge of a city, close enough to a field to land in but low enough for everyone to see you.
You'd presumably get immediately arrested.
Now I just need to get my evil lair taken care of.
When it went to the footage of the jetpack camera it sounded like a demon screaming in my right ear.

People don't even know how to drive properly. I can't begin to imagine the chaos that would unfold if these things were commonly in use by ordinary people.
I watched that video with the James Bond theme on, fit perfectly.

At ~6 MPG, just the cost to fuel it would be expensive enough.
Yeh screw Tesla and his fucking brilliant ideas.

This totally the alternative!
[sp]i don't think i like this article[/sp]
Fuck Yeah!
Now with some improvements it can be smaller, faster, carry more fuel and be just as badass like the 50's said it would!
Whilst this is an interesting jump forward, I still think that jetpacks will only be fully-viable as a mass-popular transit method once we've discovered how to work with antigravity or antimass, meaning it takes less force and less bulky equipment to propel an individual through 3D space.

I personally don't think they will ever catch on as common public/private transport. By the time they are efficient enough we will probably have far greater alternatives, that are also far safer.
The Moller Skycar comes to mind:

We already have greater alternatives that are far safer. They're called cars. You can go anywhere you want in them, they have safety systems designed to protect passengers (and soon pedestrians), they're relatively easy to repair, they're becoming more efficient to run every year, and the chances of plummeting from the sky are roughly 0%.

Yes but your missing the point, you can fly. I should have added I meant a mutual alternative.
I would rather fly a human powered chain-pulley driven bat-wing suit. With the new materials like high strength polymers and carbon fiber, why not?
Its inefficient as hell now, but so was the automobile at its start. Pfft, why use gas when I can just feed my horse cheap shit, and have it go just as fast. With the increased interest in "vertical space" in some areas, I'm sure jetpacks will be much more common in the future, with more safety, more efficiency, and more practicality. They'll go through the same transformations the automobile has gone through.

Except the Hyperloop doesn't cause a small fortune to ride.

I'd say 100K dollars to be able to FLY is pretty worth it
Why do they call it a JETpack when it's based on propellers?
[editline]15th August 2013[/editline]
Plus it's as well sorta too huge to be really called a pack.
It's more of a micro helicopter which is needlessly uncomfortable to fly in.

For 30 minutes? Refuel? Nope. I will stick with speed transportation.
Not that this is cool, it is awesome. Except for the fact; the future will only be fun for the rich.
Anyone else think it sounds like a vacuum cleaner?
is it bad im thinking of GTASA?
