Due to AOL's incompitence and their problems with World of Warcraft latency that they are refusing to rectify I have decided to cancel my AOL account, therfor I need a new ISP.
I need a package that:
- Has at least 8mb/s download speeds
- Unlimited or a very high bandwith cap
- Includes a decent line rental plan as well
Anyone got any ideas?
If you want to go cable, Virgin Media.
If you want ADSL, BeThere (O2).
Stay away from BT
1.5mb/s, paying for 8mb/s
Avoid Tiscuntli at all costs, they give shit speeds to any torrent (it was an arse when gmod.org used torrents) and they practically block steam during peak times as apparently it's 'P2P software'.
TLDR: tiscali are fuckwits.
BeThere or Virgin.
BT promised me 8 mb the fuckers
BT promised me 8 mb the fuckers
Did they really though? Or did they promise up to 8mb?
bethere
Virgin
I'm on the 20mb package, i usually get 1mb/s download rate. Highest was about 3.4mb/s on steam.
Connection never dies and i never get much lag even when im downloading on laptop and playing something on PC.
If you can't get BeThere or Cable, probably PlusNet (http://plus.net) - they've won trillians of awards for customer service.
Also, please don't get tiscali, or I will personally rape you
Do not go with BT or Tiscali or I will personally come and shove a paparazzi long range camera lens up your ass.
Don't get Sky, it's slow as shit during peak times.
Virgin are shit with me lately
Constant cut offs the past few months and I don't like the customer service, but all things aside Virgin are alright I guess

Sky aren't that bad IMO, that said I did switch to sky after several years with tiscali. I suppose dial-up would have been an improvement on Tiscali.

PlusNet have become a very good ISP in the past few years, they keep bumping our line speed up, currently at 12Mbps. Not bad considering I started 4 years ago with 2Mbps.
BeThere, hands down, in my opinion. They've been happy to give me pretty much everything I've asked for where any other ISP either would say no or simply wouldn't understand. Reverse DNS record? Done in a tick. Static IP for free, yep, you can have that too. Want help tuning your ADSL2+ modem to get a few extra megabits, sure, we'll help out with that too. Their customer support (and usergroup actually) are both top notch and I can't see myself using anyone else if this continues.
I'm on UKFSN fyi, very good service but my speed is slow as I'm so far from my exchange I'm surprised I get internet at all.

I've been using Sky's unlimited package for 2+ years and I've never ever had any slowdowns, not even a single one, I've always been able to download at max speed via http/ftp/bittorrent no matter the time, what are you using.
I used to be on virgin and it was shit, slow service (like 1mbs when we paid for 8) and loads of cut outs then we switched to bethere and my faith in the internts was restored, I get about 13-16mbs download and about 2mbs upload now and with 4 computers connected they each get about 13mbs.
+ it's cheap with great customer service.

You pay for UP TO x mbps.
I pay for 10mbps, I get 10mbps.
O2. It's incredible, constant great speeds. And if you have a phone on O2, you can get unlimited 8mb internet for £7.99. Best ISP I've ever been with.

From what I've heard, Sky pretty much forces you to use their router (unless you extract the username / password) - can you confirm this?

I get over 5meg most of the time and sometimes nearly the full 8meg and I'm in Wales.
I would have to say Virgin
Like people are saying get BEThere, their website looks shit and unprofessional but i guess it just keeps new customers away from leeching my internets :D anyway they have amazing customer support, forums and so on, top speed and really cheap too. Cant go wrong with them.

o2 is same as BEthere i think (someone told me that before)
Don't touch virgin.
If you read one piece of advice from this thread, don't go near virgin.
My internet dies almost every week despite them constantly sending wave after wave of incompetent servicemen to repair whatever problem causes my net to die constantly.
Read all there smallprint on traffic managing etc. as well, there's some really tight resctrictions IIRC.
After receiving a "free upgrade" to 10MB/s a month or so ago (maybe give me 20MB/s and you'll have repaid me for all the downtime I've had) I've hit my top speed 3 times. Yeah.
Stay away at all costs. If they spent as much time making their services as good as their advertising they'd be a good company. But they don't.
Edit: Their traffic managment isn't as tight after my 10MB/s upgrade. They're still dire though.

It sounds like you have had an isolated case. They seem very good from my experience.

Confirmed.
But, they (at least used to..) supply Netgear DG834GT's.
