Smith was up for the lead part in Quentin Tarantino's "Django Unchained," EW reports, but decided against accepting the role.
“Django wasn’t the lead, so it was like, I need to be the lead," Smith said. "The other character was the lead!” The "other character" that Smith is referencing is bounty hunter King Schultz, played by Christoph Waltz, who won an Oscar for his portrayal of the character. Waltz, it should be noted, won Best Supporting Actor at the 85th annual Academy Awards, a role that many felt was a lead.
“I was like, ‘No, Quentin, please, I need to kill the bad guy!’” Smith said, spoiling the film. As a result of Smith's passing, Jamie Foxx took on the role of Django.

“I thought it was brilliant,” Smith added. “Just not for me.”
Will Smith is always too happy looking, Jamie Foxx pulls off the 'pissed off nigger' better than anyone else in my opinion
Glad he didn't, good actor but Jamie Foxx is a better fit.

I really can't see Will Smith even saying nigger, it just doesn't seem like it's in his character.

His history of comedic and positive movies may also affect our perception of him but yeah, he always does look kind of happy.
he didn't even swear once when he was making music.
he really is too soft to be in a Tarantino film :v:

Wasn't he in Bad Boys II?

I dunno, it might have been interesting to see Will Smith pulling the role of Django, the blackest nigger in the west.
I mean Jim Carrey wasn't all that bad in the movie 23 either.
It could've been good, but I think Jamie Foxx was a better pick anyways.

Don't think will smith would have been a good choice for the movie though.
Who thinks Will Smith can pull off a kick-ass beard like Jamie Fox?
In all honesty Jamie Foxx turned out to be the perfect fix for Django. He was serious when he needed to be and funny as shit when he needed to be, but also wasn't in your face about it. Smith could've pulled it off with some work but with Foxx in the current movie, I can't see anyone else but him properly doing Django justice.

I mean shit and fuck are like swearing 101 but saying nigger is arguably a bit worse.
should've gotten Eddie Murphy instead
That would be the funniest shit ever.

Will Smith has to be the whitest black man in existence.

If he had gotten this role, the movie would've been a gem among the other shit in his movie career.
Misleading title, I thought you meant he was condemning it for the use of the n-word or something.

"I like the way you die, Boy!"
Jamie Foxx totally nailed that role.

I think that award goes to Wayne Brady.
I think that award goes to Wayne Brady.
Have you seen Wayne's dancing?
I like Will Smith, and I'd totally like to see him in a Tarantino movie. However I think this decision is for the better.
Jamie nailed this role perfectly, and I don't think Will would have felt as natural in his position.
I do however think I'd enjoy seeing Will as not a lead role in a Tarantino movie though. Many of Tarantino's movies follow the events of several people, and I that's the kind of role I'd like to see Will take. He has a strong personality, but I fear that a Tarantino movie with him in focus could end up feeling too much like a Will Smith movie than a Quentin Tarantino movie. It would be a nice change of his usual roles.
Um this is like, so old I dunno. We knew about this BEFORE the movie was in theater.
I think I'll pick it up today.
When you're rich as hell, you can always afford to take down offers like these.

after all these months he rejected it again? Jesus that guy is relentless!
Please OP, why post so late?
this makes me think, imagine how the film would be if all the white people couldn't bring themselves to say 'nigger' and instead said 'n-word'
pure comedy

Best goddamn scene in the entire movie.
I fail to see how Django Unchained would have been improved by adding a helping of "Aw hell naw".
He also turned down the lead role in The Matrix because he thought it wouldn't do well, so he opted to do that Wild Wild West movie instead. lol
