• My eyesight is deteriorating?

Hey- Well I never thought I'd ever have to reach out for medical assistance on Facepunch but here goes. Long story short: my eyesight is deteriorating, and alarmingly fast at that. I pride myself on my good eating habits, getting good sleep and what not, but as of recently I've been having difficulty seeing. My vision has become blurry when looking at things long distance- My best guess would be 30~45 yards away. I am becoming very anxious about this because I think it has something to do with my computer usage. As a web/file/game server owner I have to spend roughly 3~4 hours on the computer everyday. I am smart about it; I take breaks, keep a back light on, lower my screen brightness, and I get good sleep. Nevertheless, my vision is becoming blurry. This wouldn't be an issue for me, if it weren't for the fact that I want to be a pilot when I graduate college. More specifically, a U.S. Naval Aviator. The thing is, you need to have PERFECT vision in order to fly for the Navy. Glasses/contacts/laser eye surgery won't cut it and will get you rejected. Could this be merely a phase whilst growing? Or is it a sign that I need to start changing my routine? Is there anything I can do in order to stop this trend, and possibly even correct it? Have any of you been through a similar plight? I am seriously becoming nervous and anxious over this, any stories/help/feedback is much appreciated!

Why do people always feel like FP is the best place for medical advice?
Go see a real doctor. Why do people always feel like FP is the best place for medical advice?
I forgot to mention, I have already made plans and spoken to one over the phone, however I am inbetween doctors at the moment, and it may be a while.
Go see a real doctor. Why do people always feel like FP is the best place for medical advice?
Sharing stories and medical records may help people to stay in a good mood through the whole thing? I guess... [editline]23rd December 2013[/editline] But I can kind of understand your worries. I have hypermetropia and myopia, that is I can't see objects too close or too far from me very well, and on top of that my right eye works better than my left one (Not by much, but it makes me worry a bit). And one of my long term goals since I was a kid has been to be a pilot. I've talked with some pilots in fact, at least in my country you don't need to have perfect eyesight for a civilian license, and while I'm registered as a member of the Air Force reserve (Think of it as the US Selective Service System, though there is one reserve for the Army, one for the Navy and one for the Air Force) I don't really think I'll get to fly planes and helicopters if I ever get called for duty. Still, I plan to work hard, save cash and pay my own flying classes, eventually maybe even buy a Cessna and fly around the world. I can't tell you much, really. But I hope is only temporal. Good luck.
When people ask medical questions on here, they will be lucky if those of us who actually know information on topics like this even view them, but even still it isn't enough as we don't have M.D.'s. I can help but only to a certain extent. Many of the courses that I've taken have covered eyesight, our perception of it, and the physiology of it. However the amount that we've learned about abnormalities and failures of the visual system is quite limited - only to general presbyopia/myopia, yellowing of the lens. Staring onto a computer screen for hours will not deteriorate your eyesight, it is a myth. I'm almost 21 and have been staring at a screen for hours and hours since I was very little. The only problem that can arise is if you don't ever look away and never try to focus in on things outside of your focal point (changing focus) it may weaken the ciliary muscles around the lens, but you would have to be really going out of your way to never look away from the screen. How old are you? Do your parents use glasses? You could just be becoming near/farsighted - a common occurrence. If you have been spending a lot of time focused in on papers in front of you (like studying for long hours), for a brief time it may become hard to refocus. Do you see an abnormal amount of those strings of chunked up vitreous humour in your eyes recently (those "floaters")? Any bright colours/flashes of light spontaneously appearing? Any actual eye pain? If this is the case, you may be experiencing retinal detachment, which would also coincide with a bit of a loss of peripheral vision as well as a loss in visual acuity. Is it blurry all around, or only in a certain spot? You may just just have a bit of a stye developing - a bump on the eyelid can push against the eye, distorting vision to varying degrees. Or you may even have the equivalent on the inner eye, distorting your sight infront of your lens. It could also be possible that your eyes just aren't as fast at focusing as what they used to be, or perhaps even just the muscles that control your lenses aren't as good as what they used to be - becoming more near/farsighted - which is extremely common for people to develop.
I'm sorry dude, you probably don't have 20/20 vision.
You have three days.
Eat some carrots.
my guess is your eyes are not 20/20 but 40 yards away is half a football field, you at least have good vision and the air force does take pilots who have a specific typeof lasic done when its only correcting vision a small amount. you are not loosing your eyesight, its just growing up, by the time you are like 19-20 your eyes stop really changing, my prescription kept getting thicker and thicker but these last 4 years, my lenses have barely changed at all [editline]23rd December 2013[/editline] also eyesight isn't dependant on TV or computer usage, your eyes are supposed to be spheres but like all biological functions something tendsng to not work perfectly and most peoples eyes are slightly elliptical and it gets worse as your eyes grow
eyesight deteriorates. It's a fact of life.
It may not be from your habits, sometimes it just happens, it could pass and it might not, my vision started to go bad once and a doctor I visited suggested glasses, being the stubborn person I am I did not in fact get any glasses and over time my eyesight returned to normal, a little better than normal actually. There was also this one time where I got a sore eye (just the right eye) and a for a few weeks ,even after the sore eye, my right eye was a bit blurry but once again, eventually returned to normal.
This is the reason why I started wearing specs. For me it's genetic. So far my left eye is affected, not the right. But if you wear glasses, the feeling goes away so get sorted out by the opticians and you won't have to worry. It's either genetic trait, nothing bad is gonna happen other than having one lens stronger than the other. It took me 10 years to wear mine. It's been a month now and I'm quite happy with my now improved vision. My optician and doctor said the retina is in good shape, nothing is obstructing it. Just don't worry, wear glasses in the long term for now.
Hey, at least you don't have astigmatism. I can't see past the length of my arm without my glasses.

I'm suffering from the same, but you know OP a laser eye-surgery will correct your vision back to 20/20 (or w/e perfect vision) in about 15 minutes. Might be a little uncomfy experience though, but being a patriotic U.S. serviceman you should be able to deal with it. [editline]23rd December 2013[/editline] Also wait what, laser eye surgery will get you rejected? The fuck.. Seems to me like you're out of luck.
Are your eyes sore, irritated or unusually red? My eyesight went downhill a year ago, turned out I had iritis, which is a treatable inflammation. Had to take eye drops, and my vision improved immediately.

you should stop masturbating
I have something like this. My left eye is far sighted and my right eye is near sighted. It is terrible during the night time. Just get some glasses and poof all better. I told my eye doctor I'm on the computer anywhere from 3 - 12 hours a day and he said it had nothing to do with it.
