it only took them this long to actually show something we've not already seen
it only took them this long to actually show something we've not already seen
If only they showed some proper gameplay footage rather than a majority of their trailers being pure "cinematic". I still don't understand if it's trying to be an fps or a space SIM.
A guy I work with has been bouncing off the walls over this game. Can't wait to hear his reaction
Great. Now add actual cities and civilizations you dumb fucks.
Great. Now add actual cities and civilizations you dumb fucks.
but the point is that you're exploring uncharted worlds? it would be nice if there were hubs, but those will be created through giant ships.
I still don't understand if it's trying to be an fps or a space SIM.
Looking at the sheer scope of the game, it's going to be a loneliness simulator.
but the point is that you're exploring uncharted worlds? it would be nice if there were hubs, but those will be created through giant ships.
Yeah but it's gonna get pretty old if I go down on a planet and fight the same robots on every planet. Granted the fact that this game even exists is fucking awesome, and knowing they generated the entire in-game universe through a single function is amazing. But there's a lot more they could have done with it.
Yeah but it's gonna get pretty old if I go down on a planet and fight the same robots on every planet.
it's gonna be boring exploring the same procedurally generated planets every time too
it's gonna be boring exploring the same procedurally generated planets every time too
It should be a standard to have procedural generated content if anything.
It should be a standard to have procedural generated content if anything.
thanks for the laugh mang no procedurally generated anything will come even close to the detail and structure made manually
thanks for the laugh mang no procedurally generated anything will come even close to the detail and structure made manually
That's why I like manually created POIs created on procedural landscapes
That's why I like manually created POIs created on procedural landscapes
it can work, but then there's the problem of transitioning from that to a bland landscape with sinewave hills
I forgot about this game, and I'm honestly not sure if I can still feel excited about it. It was announced what, three years ago?
I was expecting the blade runner quote for some reason.
I was expecting the blade runner quote for some reason.
It's a reference to it. It starts with "I've seen things..." and ends with "...you wouldn't believe".
Well it was Rutger Hauer narrating
And this confirms it.

I feel like there's not much... gameplay. "Discovering" new worlds sounds like it'd be cool for the first planet, especially when every planet is just grass with different colors, sky with different colors, and rocks. Then spore-like robots and animals. What'd make it really cool is SpaceBuild. build harvesters for oxygen and nitrogen and CO2 and water on these planets and sap their supply, then use these resources to colonize planets and asteroids, and create life support on your ship, like in spacebuild. I mean, Garry already stole Gmod Survival and made it into Rust; why not do the same with SpaceBuild?
Any information on what platforms this will be on? If this is not going to be available for PC I guess I'll have to sit out on it. I hate *console* exclusives.

this game is going to be incredibly shallow
Well now that I saw some basic shooting I'm even more confused by what this game's strength is supposed to be. Is it just how MUCH content there is to explore? Because I haven't seen anything particularly interesting done with that quantity, and world gen only tends to be so interesting unless you find some rare cool-looking glitches where huge weird stone spires have formed instead of proper mountains or something. It doesn't even look like the type of game where you just get comfy and look at some weird aliens since there's combat and all the stuff's gonna be named by players, presumably in a fashion that narrowly dodges swearword filters. It doesn't even look like there's gonna be lots of weird worlds to explore like levitating jellyfish on a gas giant or something, it just seems like dinosaur jungle all over, and those are probably already the "interesting inhabited" worlds picked for presentation, omitting the dead rocks that likely litter most of the universe and you'll fly by while hoping your life detector will go off while passing a planet with a weird color.

They've also said that there's some weird stuff the closer you get to the center of the galaxy but they've opted not to show that stuff. We'll see what it looks like when it's out.

once i discover a huge planet i'm going to name it "postal's ass" jk jk love you postal
thanks for the laugh mang no procedurally generated anything will come even close to the detail and structure made manually
Haha of course not yet but it definitely will. You have no faith in math. Computers have already started analyzing art and generating new art in styles of old:
it can work, but then there's the problem of transitioning from that to a bland landscape with sinewave hills
I wouldn't worry about software engineering problems. I'm sure there are multiple methods that deal with this, either analytically or through other techniques like Simulated anealing, genetic programming, mesh deforming, w/e.
I'm pretty sure the robots and animals are also proceduraly generated to some extent.
Yes, they use L-systems which model living organisms using math and language. So they started with a whole bunch of hand made templates to start with, parameterized everything, made a system of hierachy/ancestry which governs the passing of traits between related species. They then trained this system to have some understanding of art and coherence so that each planet fits aesthetically.
fuck. shit. I cannot wait. I'm pretty sure it won't have a full price tag, so $15-$30, even $45 for this would be a huge bargain for me. Love everything I've read and seen about this so far. Even if it would get old after a while, I could see myself constantly coming back to it.
I'm interested but I don't think it'll live up to the hype.
