:o
I don't see this as a bad thing really. It seems really logical. Usually you guys are all up in arms about corporations not paying tax, But this is just closing a loophole.
I support this, people are literally attempting to avoid taxes by buying online. Most cases it makes up in shipping, but a lot of sites with free shipping on top adds up. I bought from newegg before they charged me tax and I thought that was dumb they didn't charge me at that time.
oh you guys are reaching the end of a golden era of cheap shit; being from the UK and looking at the prices on newegg compared to ours makes me shed a tear sometimes
Aww man... Well, it was going to happen eventually.
This is going to be annoying, but then again most things that are good for everyone are also annoying to the individual.
If I'm being charged 30 dollars for my game on Steam, the one where I'm getting no physical item, I better not have to pay a fucking tax.

Look at all the ppl unwilling to support the gov services they demand..... On a lighter note- it's not much. Where I live it's 6%. (Though this percentage varies by state and by county)
I have to pay 24% VAT whenever I buy anything and you guys are bitching about 6% you should have been paying anyway? Why weren't online purchases taxed in America already?
God, people. It's time that this starts to be taxed, there's really no reason not to. It's not going to be a fucking 30% tax for Christ's sake, it's probably going to be like 6 or 7%.
I have to pay 24% VAT whenever I buy anything and you guys are bitching about 6% you should have been paying anyway? Why weren't online purchases taxed in America already?
I think it was a loophole; one that they are evidently working on closing.
Why not?
It's just another unnecessary way to squeeze money out of the populace. Also it's asinine to spend a shitload of money online and then have to pay taxes that would equate to a shipping charge.
At least it's better than tariffs.
While i dont support it, it wont be too bad for cheap items. But for expensive items, it could raise costs a ton. For instance, car parts. Ive been looking into purchasing a new steering rack for my car. Thats $800, plus $60 tax (at 7.5% in my state, i dont see a certain percent listed in the article) Then some people order engine+transmission combos online, some are usually $3000 which would be $225 in tax, plus a couple hundred in shipping
At least it's better than tariffs.
Nothing is better than anything. Every step like this moves to make the internet a closed system. The moment you enforce taxes means that you're putting a burden on creation and freedom of information, and the sale of digital goods themselves. Tell me what rational person would go out and risk selling $1 digital items for millions, even tens of millions in fines, by fucking up taxes across 51 states and various countries? It's already made a huge impact on games themselves, look at all the regions that simply don't have any localizations or drive for some games, that's not just because they think their market wont buy it, y'know.

op i'm rating you dumb not the thread just so you know
Accept BTC and other cryptos?
They didn't have this before? Wow, now I feel kind of shit having GST&PST tacked onto all my orders.
This is good. Keeping up with technology is a good thing.
I just feel sorry for all the programmers who have to deal with all the different tax rates for different locations

I'd hate to pay out the ass just to pick up a used part from someone on a forum, ontop of the paypal fee. Unless we all send them as gifts. better start a subi junkyard har
If I'm being charged 30 dollars for my game on Steam, the one where I'm getting no physical item, I better not have to pay a fucking tax.
Oh, quit your bellyaching. Us Washingtonians have been paying tax on Steam purchases for as long as Steam has been a distribution channel. It's not a big deal.
I don't think that you understand the purpose of taxes.
That's rather arrogant of you to assume. I don't think we should be placing another arbitrary tax on the U.S. citizen.
Couldn't last forever but let's face it, we knew this was coming
So what, they're supposed to leave one of the fastest growing markets completely untaxed? Sorry but federal/state services don't just pay for themselves with money pulled from asses. The online market is fuggin huge and is growing substantially every day. People are no longer buying taxable goods and are now buying goods which are tax-free.
I'd just prefer my government to trim away the literal lifetime of tax code we have before scrawling out new stuff, when the old is still fucking up our lives on a daily basis. (The current quantity of literature regarding our tax code is such an amount that if you were to spend your entire lifetime reading it, you wouldn't nearly finish it all.)
One thing to note- Internet purchases were never free from sales tax. There just wasn't a law "forcing" the retailer to collect it (short version/more or less accurate) However, the purchaser was required to declair it on their state tax forms. You did that did you not? Hey look on the bright side- at least it's not a VAT.
That's rather arrogant of you to assume. They need as much tax revenue as they can get. Closing a loophole that allowed people to bypass sales tax is in no way arbitrary.
