Heavy fighting erupts between Armenian and Azeri forces
Heavy fighting has broken out between Armenian and Azerbaijani forces along the frontlines of the disputed Nagorno-Karabakh region, governments of both the countries said on Saturday.
Officials from each country blamed the other for the fighting that began overnight.
Russian President Vladimir Putin, meanwhile, urged all sides to cease firing and "show restraint," Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov was quoted as saying by Russian news agencies.
Nagorno-Karabakh has been under the control of Armenian military and separatists since a war between Armenia and Azerbaijan ended in 1994. Years of negotiations have brought little progress in resolving the dispute.
Fighting on Saturday marked the worst clashes since 1994, said David Babayan, spokesman for the region's separatist president.
I don't know much about that zone of the world, but they weren't massing military units at each side of the frontier since the Ukranian war since the political tensions were on the rise? Or that was another conflict in the region?

Okay, not really. Does anyone know how the hell this works? How can something called "heavy fighting" remain a limited engagement that doesn't just explode?

Putin says show restraint ; meanwhile it's all well and good to waltz into Crimea and annex it for your own economic purposes.

Russia is allied with Armenia, whilst Turkey vowed to support the Azeris. Not showing restraint could potentially end up causing a major international crisis, specially taking into account how belligerent Erdogan seems to be lately.
People here haven't really been following this, but it looks like it might go somewhere this time. Both sides have started to make ultimatums and threats of mobilisation. Lines are being drawn and dared to be crossed.
Ultimately it's up to Azerbaijan if this turns into a full blown war - but Azerbaijan has been arming themselves extremely well for the past 10 years waiting for this moment, and there seems to be huge public support to take and hold land in Karabakh.
Ceasefire was declared, Armenia said they regained full control of the area but Azerbaijan official claims to be "able to liberate occupied lands in short time." if a diplomatic settlement can't be found.

Russia sells both of them guns, and let them have their little fight. 90% Nothing will happen except death and misery and cash flowing up north.
Then putin's peacekeepers will roll on in and protect all those ethnic russians or something

Putin doesn't need to do shit. Armenia is already a good little puppet and Russia doesn't need Azerbaijan because they have their own oil.

Doesn't have to occupy and annex anything. In theory, if Russia's biggest income is selling both sides weapons, then one side dominating the other isn't in Russia's interests as it would inevitably end the sales. When one side starts becoming a clear winner, then Russia, to 'protect its financial interests' ought to go in and tell them both to go sit in a corner. Meanwhile, they'll both start buying again soon after.
