Saudi Arabia has just given the OK to start construction on the Kingdom Tower, the world's first mile-high skyscraper. The tower will be built in the coastal city of Jeddah and is set to cost a whopping cost $30 billion. Housed in the structure will be space for offices, residences, and a hotel. It's hard to even imagine how massive this thing will be; at literally one mile high, it will dwarf Dubai's Burj Khalifa, which stands at roughly 2,700ft. You could very well basejump to your limo downstairs. [The Daily, image credit via DVICE]1 Mile is equal to 1.6 kilometers approximately.
Another amazing but pointless engineering marvel.
I for one think this is awesome. I love skyscrapers.
How do they still have this much money after everything going on over there? Edit:
Oil is a magical thing.
You all took that question way to directly. I meant the company itself, not the country, oil has nothing to do with this. The company is into tourism and related services, but the area has seen less tourists the last few years, long before the uprisings happened; I just figured the company would be more cautious before it jumped headlong into something like this.
Weren't they already spending a bit too much, some time ago? Silly Saudis, petrol is not unlimited, you know...
I'm surprised this is the first mile high skyscraper
But, why?
How do you build a building that high? It's not like you can use cranes or something. I mean, how is it even possible to get the metal up there?
How do you build a building that high? It's not like you can use cranes or something. I mean, how is it even possible to get the metal up there?
First they build it horizontally and then bend it over
What okay guys lets just lift up this massive mile long building it will be easy Do they use helicopters or something
I'm sure the protesters are feeling so much better now. I bet they're all going to go back to the slums and celebrate that their government knows best!

That would be a kick ass building to base jump and hang glide off of.
Mile high club isn't worth it there, you would just end up spending life in prison for it.
imagine working on the top floor every day for a year
I for one think this is awesome. I love skyscrapers.
I think it's an interesting feat of engineering, but the building itself is ugly.
I wonder how many (practically enslaved) South Asians are going to die building that thing.
Can't wait until they run out of oil and the whole place goes to hell.
If true, that's awfully nice of him.
... to save his ass. I guess he understood that throwing money at the problem works better than suppressing it.
... to save his ass. I guess he understood that throwing money at the problem works better than suppressing it.
it's still awfully nice of him.
I have respect for the Saudi King, he also made the first mixed gender school in the kingdom.
the joke -- -- -- your head
What, did I just get whooshed? Fuck, two people said it, and they sounded somewhat serious. Am I a total failure at life or am I just misreading something

All in the wake of the MENA protests? Seems legit.
I am not excited for this thing because I think it's fucking pointless.
