• Aussie flags on cars 'racist'
People who attach Australian flags to their cars are more likely to be racist, a Perth-based researcher has found. Once the preserve of North American patriots, the flag-flying craze has swept through Australia in the past few years. University of Western Australia researcher Professor Farida Fozdar surveyed 513 people at last year's Australia Day fireworks on the Swan River foreshore. Close to half - 43 per cent - said the White Australia Policy had "saved Australia from many problems experienced by other countries", while only 25 per cent without flags agreed, according to Professor Fozar. She found 35 per cent of those with flags felt that people had to be born in Australia to be truly Australian, while 23 per cent believed that "true Australians" had to be Christian, compared with 22 per cent and 18 per cent respectively for non-flag fliers. A total of 56 per cent of people with car flags feared their culture and its most important values were in danger, compared with 34 per cent of non-flaggers. Professor Fozdar said there was no clear link between education, gender, ethnicity, citizenship, voting pattern or income and flag flying, although her survey showed younger people were more likely to adopt the practice. Eighty eight per cent of those with Australia Day car flags said they thought it showed they were proud to be Australian, while only 52 per cent of those without flags thought so, professor Fozdar said. "Many felt strongly patriotic about it - and for some, this was quite a racist or exclusionary type of patriotism - but it wasn't a particularly conscious thing for many," Professor Fozdar said. The study also revealed Australian attitudes to ethnic minorities, with only 39 per cent of "flaggers" expressing a positive view towards Aboriginal Australians compared with 47 per cent of non-flaggers. Few flag fliers or non-flag fliers expressed a positive view about Muslim Australians, with only 19 per cent of flag-fliers and 26 per cent of non-flaggers positive about the group. Just seven per cent of those with flags were positive about asylum seekers compared with 24 per cent of non-flaggers. Twenty seven per cent with flags felt positive towards Asian Australians compared with 48 per cent of those without flags. An overwhelming 91 per cent of people with car flags thought people who move to Australia should adopt Australian values, compared with 76 per cent of non-flaggers. But majorities of both groups - 60 per cent of flag-fliers and 73 per cent of non-flaggers - also felt it was best to respect and learn from each other's cultural differences. "Very clear statistical differences in attitudes to diversity between those who fly car flags and those who don't, show that flag waving - while not inherently exclusionary - is linked in this instance to negative attitudes about those who do not fit the 'mainstream' stereotype'," Professor Fozdar said. According to professor Fozdar, fewer people said they flew Australia Day car flags last year - one in five - compared with 2010 when it was one in four.
apparantly im a racist for having my aussie flag on my car, :/ Go back to ya fucking country if you think aussies are being racist for supporting there own country...
apparantly im a racist for having my aussie flag on my car, :/ Go back to ya fucking country if you think aussies are being racist for supporting there own country...
Haha I think this article might have got it right. Anyways, it's not saying that having flags on your car is racist, just that by having one you are more likely to BE racist.
Well, we are stereotypically pretty racist. :v: It doesn't surprise me at all to be honest.
the only thing I don't like about the aussies is the men who don't stop saying cunt and are smug about saying cunt around foreigners to show them how awesome Australians are with their culture or whatever. But how is the flag racist? Its symbolism has never to do with race hate or race preference. Probably something to do with the Union Jack I guess.
"cunt" is the Aussie language.
bullshit
"And what really surprised me was there so many bogans around here." said the Perth-based researcher.
"cunt" is the Aussie language.
There's a old saying that the English swear like troopers, it bred off when we sent the convict with a lower literacy and vocabulary rate and got worse as the word cunt became acceptable in day to day conversations and sentences. Its nothing to be proud of though, just makes you all look like have low intelligence and vocabulary on the whole. Older Aussie men seem far more relaxed than the youth however, maybe all aussie kids go through a period of mild tourettes or something.
thread title is silly; the article isn't saying that the flags are racist, just that people who make a point to demonstrate their patriotism (generally bogans) tend to be more racist and it's true [editline]26th January 2012[/editline]
There's a old saying that the English swear like troopers, it bred off when we sent the convict with a lower literacy and vocabulary rate and got worse as the word cunt became acceptable in day to day conversations and sentences. It's just an amount of time before they start wanting to take our national anthems out of the mornings in schools. This? If I was an aussie, I'd put a flag on my car, even if it was one of those window things. It's pathetic how many changes we've gone through just because of people complaining, falling back on their religion, and what THEY want. I may be a little racist, but come on, you know a partial of it's true. I'm not gonna go out and flame at them.
Nationalists and patriots are a bit more racist than the average.
apparantly im a racist for having my aussie flag on my car, :/ Go back to ya fucking country if you think aussies are being racist for supporting there own country...
I've had idiots on facebook posting about this for like 2 days now. I'm hoping the OP was joking but if he's not then it flew straight over his head.
Cunt is such a taboo word where i live Every time I let it loose someone has to get offended It's a good word, got that nice blunt impact and it's short and to the point, even more so than "fuck" Highly satisfying

No one actually wants to do it and half the time you've got kids making a game out of trying to sound as retarded as possible without getting in trouble for it (yes, I can remember people doing this from primary school). what are you talking about when you say "people complaining, falling back on their religion, and what THEY want"?

All people have some level of prejudice, but it's really sick if you go out on a limb and try to say 'well it's partly true anyway'.
So then what do American flags on cars mean? Christian conservative?
So then what do American flags on cars mean? Christian conservative?
more LIKELY to be Christian conservative
This just in, flag wavers more likely to be racist, stunning stuff.

I remember being in primary school, singing the national anthem, even if it was silly, and people don't want to do, you did it anyway. You have to be PROUD that that anthem is partial of what your or our country is. Too dismiss it because it's racist or semantic against a certain group of people, that came over here? It's stupid, or I think it's stupid. Maybe it's just because I grew up like that, loving my country.
"I may be racist, but you know it's true anyway." All of what I'm saying is true, and perhaps I'm a racist for it, sue me. I'm not posting here saying a whole bunch of slangs against them, cause I'd be banned, and I'm not that type of person.

Gimmie my hungry jacks

Does it if you have the Lego Land flag on your car?
So then what do American flags on cars mean? Christian conservative?
I was going to say "fundamentalist asshole", but it looks like you beat me to it! :P
I remember they tried to ban national flags from school backpacks over here. Pretty silly.
I remember they tried to ban national flags from school backpacks over here. Pretty silly.
Yeah, it's pretty stupid to ban flags of any sort. If people want their symbols, I say let them.
What position are Australians descended from British settlers in to say that, when they themselves 'came over'?
I'm not an aussie nor British, so I can't say for sure myself. That was a time period established long ago, and if I remember there has always been some sort of rivalry between them. Just like Canada/Quebec, not too long ago Quebec wanted to declare independence from us. What I'm trying to say, even though that it was a fair amount of time ago, there was still an established point, and since then there were things set in place for the heritage of the country, correct? Aussies have their own set of system as well as British, I imagine? When colonies that still have a medieval mindset of religion, not to say that they all are, but a fair amount of the 'older' elders are. Those are the ones that want to see things changing, the ones who grew up in the country established a mindset that the country was their country. While their parents wanted change. If that makes sense, I may just be making non sense bullshit.
