Was thinking about how I use :unimpressed: more to show shock/disbelief at things, rather then its intended use. Anyone else use smilies in ways like that?

i don't use emoticons at all outside of talking to specific people but often i see people using ':)' to denote sarcasm and it's the most fucking aggravating thing i can imagine
using ":)", or even worse, ";)", outside a context where they could be used to congratulate a person, is a surefire way to piss me off, probably because some years back i used to know a person who used them constantly and also possessed the ability to be an insufferable little shit, so that association kind of stuck
nowadays when i see someone use those in any kind of argument, they're like icons of open mockery of the opposition, and if used in other conversation, especially as some kind of an opener like "hey :)" i get the feel that the other party wants something from me and is only expecting to get on my good side to get it, leading to a sense of dishonesty and distrust
the only smilies i use are pretty neutral stuff like ":V" and ":U" and such, though i've heard some people dislike them just like i dislike the basic "happy" ones

How is ":)" a congratulatory thing? It's literally just a smiling face, there's nothing at all to make it congratulatory instead of any other positive statement. Sounds like you arbitrarily assigned a meaning to it and then get frustrated whenever anybody doesn't use it the way you randomly decided to. Using it in an argument as a mocking way is definitely really obnoxious but your tangent about using it as an opener almost sounds paranoid.
i used to use T_T as a :| face when i was 12 and played halo CE
:DDDDD
How is ":)" a congratulatory thing? It's literally just a smiling face, there's nothing at all to make it congratulatory instead of any other positive statement.
my wording was probably severely lacking there, i meant congratulatory and other positive contexts.
but your tangent about using it as an opener almost sounds paranoid.
i do not see how it is only a "tangent".
i've dealt with a plenty of sycophants who only wanted to exploit my talents for their own ends, and they have a real way of getting right in your face sugary-sweet and overly polite - this often includes carpet bombing you with happy smileys. compared to that, honesty is blunt.
a paranoid person expects everyone to be out to get them by default, i'm merely cautious with people and wait for them to show their hand before coming to any big conclusions, but on the internet, in certain things, there's a set of signs that are always all too obvious to see.
i'm finnish, i prefer my conversations clipped and to the point, with no extra emotional expression attached, unless there's something truly worth having a laugh about. because otherwise it's just dishonest.

:) sarcastically is incorrect, :^) is the real sarcastic smile
I use the "call me酪" emoji to establish a casual tone. Most smilies feel sarcastic or malicious.

I usually only use :v nowadays, and even then not that often. I find the usual default emoji sets rather ugly to look at, especially Discord's. Just seems like there's not an ounce of sincerity in them anymore.

i feel that is less a problem with emojis and more a problem with a cynical, ironic worldview that much of our age group has defaulted to in these trying times

this is why my discord servers have custom emojis based on users, it lets us evoke the essence of their being and personality in a small pictogram which might not make sense to an outside observer but makes sense to us.
I can't remember who I stole ":<" from, but I started using it to indicate disappointment.
i use the more basic stuff, like "c:" ":c" or "^^", don't really use emotes much tbqh.
