I'm surprised individual countries haven't already done this, to be honest.
what the fuck?
[editline]25th May 2016[/editline]
why the fuck?
so what if there just isn't much locally made stuff?
I can understand positively encouraging Netflix to include more regional/local content, but downright quotas?
Yeah, fuck that shit...
so what if there just isn't much locally made stuff?
well we got a billion shitty crimedramas in the nordics but other countries probably not.
does the EU make allot of good content for this to even work?

Depends on your taste in content, which is mainly why I think this is BS on a big scale.
If you're a outlier compared to what the general populace likes, then something like this fucks you over.
Don't worry guys, we'll just use our massive stockpile of mediocre swedish crime dramas to fill the quota.
i guess if it goes completely sideways they can put amateur stuff on there.
that'd also get some exposure to lesser known makers i suppose.

IMO anything but crime dramas or cringy romance/love comedies is Acceptable.
I just want everything that's currently on there to be available everywhere. Apparently Better Call Saul S2 is on Netflix, just not where I live, right in the middle of the US.
We should just vote for a new EU leader. Oh wait.
You could petition your representatives in the European Parliament, or your national government, as both will have the opportunity to scrutinise and vote on this

Since it's a simple EU-wide 20% quota they're talking about, Netflix could just add a shitload of BBC content in order to comply and not even add anything from any other countries. Which makes the idea seem a bit useless really
Worth noting this is a directive, not a regulation. That means the EU countries would need to individually choose to enforce this - which I'd like to think none of them would

Yeah so that little power that the representatives have can put that power into the little power that the country has as a whole so that collectively fuckall can be done about it.

region restrictions are the stupidest thing in the age of the internet

Eh the sheer amount of tv series in europe is staggering albeit the quality of much is questionable.

Or Icelandic crime dramas. 44 minutes of solving a dick drawn on inside of a bathroom stall door in Reykjavik.

what's the point of the quota then?
-if- they get permission from the networsk.
Couldn't Netflix create like a -ton- of static, boring, placeholder videos in their europe offices, call them netflix documentaries, and call it a day?

They don't even need to do that.
There's enough shitty european TV dramas and movies to fill that quota a trillion times over.
This is a non-issue for Netflix.
