Jesus christ, why?

To get one side look bad?
Dude, Russia will not be happy about this.
I don't believe MANPADs can distinguish between civilian and military aircraft.
Even if they can, the real question is why are airliners flying above a warzone in the first place?
This is true, that is the operators job.
Christ, the comments on that source.

There are some well trained CIA-Agents in Syria, islamists are not so accurate
If Russian-armed terrorist tried to shoot down a US plane, how close to WW II would we be?
Typos are pretty funny.

THE JEWS DID THIS.
PLEAS E SAVE AMERICA.
NU KE ISRAEL, NEW YORK, HOLLYWOOD.
I am mainly wondering how did civilian plane survive AAM launch.
Either these were some fucking shitty missiles or the pilot deserves a medal.

Probably was out of effective range.

A Civilian passenger jet would have no way to avoid a SAM, if I am correct?
Jesus christ, why?
Why not? It's a great way to escalate a situation if either side was responsible.
i don't understand this and without the details it all sounds really sketchy, with very little confirmation of events from any side. i'm mostly confused because commercial jets fly at like 30,000ft so a MANPAD, the kind of weapon you'd expect to be used by a small force operating in Syria, would not be a threat to the aircraft at all, so either the aircraft was unusually low or a much larger and more sophisticated weapon was used... or this didn't happen at all
A Civilian passenger jet would have no way to avoid a SAM, if I am correct?
depending on the angle of attack, altitude, and range to target, there's lots of ways an aircraft that isn't even taking evasive maneuvers can avoid a SAM
A Civilian passenger jet would have no way to avoid a SAM, if I am correct?
Pretty much! As NoDachi said, they must have been outside of effective range.
Or, maybe, how many today SAMs have "self destruct" functionality, where they could realize it was a mistake and abort the engage?

"The pilots managed to maneuver the plane in time however" I wonder if it was a unguided missile maybe? Otherwise I really don't see how it could miss.

Maybe the pilot opened his window and shot a flaregun away from the plane. I mean they're russians afterall.

Somebody should ask the passengers if they recall being upside down during flight

Not really true, if the pilot can see the incoming missile then he can avoid it. But that is going to be really hard in an air liner. The pilot could have been flying at above the missile's effective or maximum range, for a strela-2 that is about 4000-5000 meters. The cruising altitude of an A320 is somewhere around 10000 meters.

It was probably a manpad, they are fire and forget missiles. Not going to happen.
"Rock thrown at bee hive, thankfully misses."
Probably Al-Nursa depending on what the planes flight path was. They said they'd shoot down any plane they saw and to keep out of their radius

Missiles don't have infinite range so it could be that it just ran out of fuel and enough kinetic energy to reach the target.
Here come the Russians.
Russian power deployed in 3 2 1...
Ugh, do all Russian civilian aircraft have missile warning systems installed in them or something?
How did they know they were shot at?

68 years.

Probably
I still want to know why they're flying commercial planes over a warzone where there are forces with AA weaponry.
Are they instructed to fly above a certain height to avoid AA range or are they just being dumb?

Pretty sure every plane has them.
Pretty sure every plane has them.
Broguts is correct. Most civilian airliners and cargo aircraft have early warning radar.

The easiest way to evade a missile, guided or not, is to simply go faster.
Though I'm wondering how the pilot detected the missiles.
Several Commercial/Passenger planes have Chaff/Flare dispensers, especially those that fly over the middle east and warzones in general. It is perfectly acceptable that they maneuvered and chaffed out.
