So I just bought a new laptop. I was looking at a similar one that was $250 that had an 64GB SSD and 6GB RAM. The one I ended getting doesn't have an SSD and only has 4GB RAM. Should I get an SSD? Or double the RAM up to 8GB? I plan on doing a lot of Adobe CS5 work and 3D modelling and CAD.
why do you need a ssd for CAD?
Well for fast load times and such. I'm just wondering which would be a better payoff.
for adobe cs5 and CAD, go with 8gb RAM. The load time you sacrifice (if anything significant) will payoff in the performance.
Also, a laptop for CAD? Really?
An ssd will also give you much better battery life than a normal mechanical drive.
Some people can burn money. I made a build for a friend for CAD for $2000, and shit's fucking amazing.
For CAD, an equivalent laptop is probably hitting $5000.
Actually, I found a good deal on an m17x. I got it for $1500. I was planning on spending $250 more so I'll spend that on a RAM upgrade. I also need to bring it with me to school each day. That's why it'd be a laptop.
m17x, isn't that an alienware laptop? for CAD find a laptop with a Nvidia quadro series card.
Dell Precision M6500's come with quadros and quad core i7's and up to 8gb ram. I figure they're more than capable at chewing through cad usuage.
Edit: I take it back, they can have up to 32gb of ram apparently.

Yeah, but I'm fine with what it has. The CAD is only for school. I saw some stuff with a Quadro and that was in the $5000. I don't need that much power.
Still, a Quadro card is unmatched for CAD performance, even when compared to a GTX 480.
Like I said, this is only for school, not some multi-billion dollar business. As fun as that would be.
Don't go alienware or dell. Granted dells might be cheap but have a short lifespan. And alienwares are expensive and also have a quite short lifespan. And if you are doing 3d modelling the more ram the better, 3Ds Max is constantly raping my ram.
I already got the Alienware off a great deal on eBay. I know what people say, but it was $250 cheaper than the Qosmio I was about to order. With that saved money, I get a faster processor and more RAM.

But with that you have probably lost 3 years off your laptops life. Honestly dell/alienware have the worst lifespan and terrible support. not the best move.
