• Games Freeze for Short Periods of Time.
    9 replies, posted
Hello, I recently built a new PC. I seem to be having issues while playing games. For example, while playing Team Fortress 2 my screen will randomly lag for a brief period of time (1 second) then continue normally. The sound doesn't cut out, and the screen doesn't go black. The game just simply freezes. This has happened with other games as well, not just Team Fortress 2. Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks! Have you restarted your computer?
Have you restarted your computer?
Yes, this has been an ongoing problem.
Yes, this has been an ongoing problem.
Everything up to date, Windows updates, GPU drivers, everything?
Everything up to date, Windows updates, GPU drivers, everything?
Yep. If this helps, the game itself doesn't freeze. Everything keeps running normally. So, for example, when I turn 180 degrees in game it will freeze mid-turn and then continue. The freeze is very short.
This happened to me on TF2 as well. I'd just recently delved into the world of overclocking and the issue only rose after my first stable overclock; I'd figured it wasn't stable and that was why I'd been lagging so much. I hadn't undone the settings (well, I originally threw it back at the stable values and it didn't even fix it) and it's currently working flawlessly in TF2. I'm not sure what caused the lag on your end, or mine for that matter, but I think it may have been a small issue with TF2 at the time (possibly network related; I had a very similar freeze on Assassins Creed 1 before due to networking issues) so maybe my personal experience may help you isolate the issue on your end. If you're curious about the Assassins Creed 1 issue, it was absolutely similar (freezing for several seconds at a time even though my rig could more than handle it) and the issue was because my game would try to upload the statistics (such as each kill or flag found) to an external Ubisoft server (which was down) so the game would freeze until it tried enough times (I guess; or it probably would have never resumed unless the server went back up) and gave up on uploading the data. This is all probably a garbled mess so here's a link to the issue I had (which may be the issue you are having): http://answers.yahoo.com/question/index?qid=20090604235510AAig12V Good luck!
Thank you. The issue seems to be with more than just TF2 though. It's almost as though my mouse battery dies, and then comes back in a split second. (No, it's not the battery.)
If the gameplay doesn't freeze, you're probably having interference/connection issues with the wireless receiver of your device(s); I had to use a USB extender before mine would stop cutting off all the time. If the game actually freezes, then chances are it's not your peripherals (mouse/keyboard), but if the scene is still playing when you "freeze" then I'd check the connection to the receiver, and maybe invest in a mouse-pad (if you don't already have one).
Have you defragged your hard drive? If you haven't then use this.
Well...that seemed to do the trick...and I have no idea why! Thank you both very much. Any other useful programs I should know about by the way? I really like Defraggler.
