Converting my 32 bit OS to a 64 bit OS (Facepunch, you are my last hope)
24 replies, posted
I have been searching around the internet to look for a way to download a 64 bit operating system (if that's possible, apparently other people are trying it though) because I need it to run a program that will allow my shitty windows vista to run certain dos programs and games. My last laptop had windows XP and I used to make wolfenstein maps and skins for walls. The program I used gets the "this system does not support full screen mode" error whenever I try to run it, so I had found a way around it with workaround.com, but apparently, I haven't. If anyone knows a way to attain a 64 bit OS, please help me.
Only if you have a 64 bit architecture, otherwise it's not going to work.

What's that? (I know that's an ignorant question)

You have to have a processor that can handle 64 bits
'certain dos programs and games' run 16-bit not 64-bit. 64-bit OSs can not run old DOS games in that manner so you either need to use a 32-bit OS like WinXP or a 16-bit OS like Windows 3.0 or DOS. You sure you don't have 64-bit and 32-bit confused there?
You need a Dual Core CPU or a Quad Core CPU to handle 64 Bit OS's. That and it's useful to have 4GB+ RAM.

So you're trying to get a 64 bit OS to have an operating system that will be compatible with more things? If you upgrade to 64 bit, it'll be quite the opposite. You'll probably have less compatibility with those older DOS games, as well as issues running newer programs, too.

OMG... Really what is that? Microsoft.com. Is this a joke. I would rather use a calculator to play games than dare touch a Windows UI much less the Demonic company that supports it. If your going to link to an article by everything holy please use a reputable source. Not a company who eats the worlds economy bit by bit.

I just find it repulsive that people who have something. (ex. iPhone, Android, Mac, Windows, Linux) have to base everything they do around that sole affliction. ...but maybe thats just the way people are. Thoughts?

It is the most relevant response. He said he needed help with vista.

Very true given the circumstances. Just it has been bothering me all week and and couldn't help my self.

It's not the games/programs themselves, it's a program I want to install that will allow me to run them. http://www.mydigitallife.info/2007/06/27/workaround-to-this-system-does-not-support-full-screen-mode-in-windows-vista/

It's called catalyst. This instruction set tells me to download here http://www.mydigitallife.info/2007/06/27/workaround-to-this-system-does-not-support-full-screen-mode-in-windows-vista/
The guide seems pretty clear but I see how you could get lost. If you infact got lost. Did you follow the guide? Is that what your having problems with. Sorry if i'm not understanding too well.
You cannot upgrade 32-bit OS to a 64 bit. You MUST perform a clean install

microsoft operates with a income of 14.569 Billion dollars
the world economy would be shit without microsoft
God damn, everyone in this thread is absolutely fucking handicapped (apart from binary, he actually knows what the fuck he's talking about... Keep this shit in the Hardware and software section and you'll receive much more intelligent help.)
1. You need a 64 bit copy of your choice of o/s
2. Hardware that supports a 64-bit o/s
3. To do a clean install
It's honestly not that fucking complicated, and i don't really understand why you need a 64bit o/s to run what ever the fuck it is your trying to run...

Maybe if you're using winxp 64-bit, not quite the case with vista or win7...
Have you tried running DosBox to run your Dos programs?
To all the people saying that you need an x64 processor to run an x64 OS, you're wrong.

You do need an x64 processor (or x86-64 if you're going to be an accuracy nazi) to run an x64 OS.
Also, you're the first person in this thread to use the term "x64" so who exactly are you complaining about?

Finally someone who has all the nuts in the bag.

That's why my Single core Athlon ran W7 x64 bit just fine then.

If you can't fucking figure out how to install your graphics drivers (do you even HAVE an ATi card?) then you don't deserve a x64 OS. Get out.
