Alan Partridge film Alpha Papa has topped the UK box office in its opening weekend, according to early figures.
The critically acclaimed comedy, which opened on 7 August, has made £2.17m so far in ticket sales.
The film is the first big screen outing for the comedy creation of Steve Coogan and Armando Iannucci.
Details of the rest of the UK box office will be released later. Comedy Grown Ups 2 and The Lone Ranger were also released at the weekend.
I'm pretty sure Pacific Rim beat Grown Ups 2 here in the UK.
Also Alan Partridge is genius.
It was pretty fucking sad how well. Grown Ups 2 did in Box Office.I have yet to watch Grown Ups 1 because of how shitty Adams Movies have been for year's

Jesus christ.
Adam Sandler movies are universally seen as crap, how do they keep doing well?
It deserves to beat both of them, I saw it the other day. Bloody hilarious, haven't laughed that much at a film in a long time.

You forget it also topped box office in America
I'm pretty sure why Pacific Rim didn't do so well in the US is since everyone thought it was a rip-off of Bay's Transformers, or just the same damn thing as Battleship. But they were so wrong, Pacific Rim is easily one of the best movies I've seen in a very long time.

My friends and I saw it, and to us it was literally just "monster vs. big robot". We couldn't see past that.
That being said, Sandler doesn't deserve his popularity at all.

Probably because its a family movie, and families went and saw it?

also probably because compared to heavy action, comedy appeals to a way larger audience
hard to call grown ups 2 comedy though

That's kind of the point of Monster vs Robot movies. The genre isn't supposed to be all gritty and realistic, like most movies strive to be, it just needs to be a fun ride to watch. That's what Pacific Rim did so well, it never took itself too seriously and was a homage to the kaiju and mecha films of the past.
I thought the original grown ups was good :(
Maybe because Jimmy Tatro was in it.

Some Alan gold for the uninitiated.
I like how Grown Ups 2 earned 124 million in the states, and 30 million in the rest of the world, where Pacific Rim earned 96 million in the States, and 247 million in the rest of the world.

That's the point mate, it's a kaiju film.
it was pretty fucking sad how well Grown Ups 2 like I never bother watching the first one on how shit it was
I don't understand your post. I've re-read it five times and I still don't understand.
Really good film. I don't think this is a trend of British shows converting well to the big screen though unfortunately. I think it's more down to Armando Ianucci who co-wrote AP, and whole also wrote The Thick of It, and did just as good a job writing In The Loop.
Still one of my favorite bits. Alan's pretty hilarious.
