A riot involving hundreds of inmates has broken out at a prison after keys were reportedly taken from a member of staff.
Trouble flared at privately-run HMP Birmingham after a prison officer was "rushed" by inmates.
Specialist Tornado riot teams have been dispatched to the category B jail, which houses 1,450 prisoners.

We've been talking to prisoners we have seen coming out of the prison and a man waiting for his son.
He told me that a riot started because of a lack of hot water for inmates. A prison officer was called to the scene and he was threatened with a syringe and his keys stolen which ultimately led to a full scale riot.
All staff have been accounted for but we are yet get any confirmed reports on any injuries.
Snippets of the article as it's quite long.
Another reason that maybe having privatised prisons are bad.

I don't think many people here think that privatised prisons are good but other parts of the article highlight the reasons more effectively
The men, who said they were calling the BBC from inside the jail, cited inadequate staff numbers, poor healthcare and nutrition, and being on "lockdown" in their cells all day as major factors that contributed to the trouble.
Prisoner Andrew Nicholls, who was released on Friday described the condition he experienced while serving his sentence.
"There's no staff, too much Mamba, (a psychoactive drug) and people are dying.
"I've seen someone hang themselves outside my cell. It's terrible - 24-hour lock-up most times. There's two officers for four floors."
The state needs to take their responsibility and run their own prisons. Private companies seeking to make a profit are not fit to run them. If they can save money somehow, they are likely to make it.

It's weird I swear more of the picture was blurred when I first saw the thread. Did anybody else see that?

imagine committing crime and then rioting because there's not enough hot water or day time tv. If i did the same i'm sure my landlord would tell me to fuck off.

You have a choice (in theory tho maybe not practice) about whether or not to stick with that landlord. In prison you are literally a prisoner.
Also you belittle their complaints. If conditions are bad enough for people to be committing suicide then maybe their grievances go beyond "tv"

Not to mention the fact that even in his terrible comparison, the landlord has a legal obligation to make hot water available to tenants in the UK:

I wonder if the prisoners have a legal case against the prison for not providing them with one of the most basic needs.

And the prisoners don't have any choices right? How about not fucking breaking the law.

Just because they've broken the law doesn't mean they should be horribly mistreated.

A little equation
Being a prisoner =/= being an animal.
Is not that if you commit a crime you istantly lose your humanity or become a wild animal. Even prisoners after all are still human.
Of course, the thickos of the country will be letting out their usual cry of " 'ang 'em all".
Honestly the prisons in this country are such a joke it was only a matter of time.
Glad to see all the staff made it out, at least. Hopefully there weren't many injuries.

You might want to try moving to China or Saudi Arabia, I think their prison systems might better fit what you're hoping for if you think having access to hot water and being allowed out of your cell for at least an hour a day is a luxury.
I'm surprised to see such a successful riot from a CAT B, And a privately owned one at that.

Its ran by G4S which means it's being ran absolutely terribly.
G4S is the last damn security service that should be running a prison, they couldn't even handle the London Olympics and the military had to stand in.
Plus G4S cash transporters are one of the worst to use as well from experience, they never kept to a timed schedule, they fucked up the collections multiple times and the drop offs were not even what we ordered on multiple occasions, we started to use our own after about 5 months of this shit.
Honestly nothing good comes from them.
Oh and lets not forget the colourful people G4S are known to hire, from people with legit mental issues like Omar Mateen and immigrant detainees as labour within the prisons they run.
Mateen then worked for British-based security firm G4S Secure Solutions in Jupiter, Florida, from September 2007 until his death. The company said two screenings of Mateen—one conducted upon hiring and the other in 2013—had raised no red flags. Nonetheless, G4S removed Mateen from his job post at a courthouse because of threats he made towards coworkers, including one threat where he claimed he would have al-Qaeda kill a deputy's family. Mateen had claimed that his coworkers and courthouse deputies were making racist comments towards him. Despite this, G4S "kept Mateen as an employee" but moved him "to a kiosk at a gated community in Palm Beach County." They never informed the community or its property management company about why he was transferred there.
The law isn't always right, and hot water during winter is not a luxury.

Wasn't there also the torture in a South African G4S ran prison too?

Yep and they're being ignored, even though there is enough evidence against it to prove they are doing it.
