I have already tried updating my video card drivers via Steam.
Never use any sort of third party program to update any sort of system driver. Always get the drivers from your devices' manufacturer. If you have an ATI card: www.ati.amd.com or Nvidia: www.nvidia.com

Steam actually downloads the latest from the website.
What kind of videocard do you have?

This isn't the first time around the block for Steam and automatic driver updates. Back when Steam was in its infancy (before the whole friends network fiasco being down for months due to stolen code, etc.) it had a driver update tool that was absolute shit. Like Windows Update, it would install a cut-down and incomplete (often times horribly broken) driver package. I remember having to naysay users on forums back then not to use it due to its horrible nature.
I have no reason not to believe the second coming of this tool isn't equally as awful, especially with Valve's LONG history of releasing terrible software full of bugs, or just being completely broken, and left broken for sometimes years or never even fixed.
I just did a brief test, and it seems terribly broken like I thought it would be. The latest ATI drivers are 11.9, but I use 11.5 and it thinks they're the latest version. That's the problem with third party driver update sites, they're often several versions behind, or at worst, several years behind.
He should use the official sources like I posted, not some buggy pile of shit that doesn't work.
Until an update program proves it's self and you see alot of people talking about how great it is just go to the site.
