• I fell victim of a Event Viewer Phishing Scam.
The scam involves a random telephone call made to an Australian number from an offshore call centre.
This just happened (I am australian), they said LOOK AT THESE ERRORS ON EVENT VIEWER 2336 ERRORS WOW I HAVE TO DELETE THEM. After this, they said look at the "Prefetch" folder and see how much files you got. And then things started getting suspicious once he linked me to support.me, where the representitive gives me a 6 digit code, this is when I started to deny them and not do it, they said they were from the "Technical Support of Windows" Now, the fuck? Pretty sure it's Microsoft and not windows. My Parents came onto the phone after I had told them what happened and got rid of the representitive saying there is no problem, so he simply hung up. After that I researched on the internet, and I found this article (where I got the beginning quote from) explaining everything. EDIT: This explains exactly what they did to me up to step 6, where I got suspicious Link is here, read OP for what I am saying.
how dumb do you have to be to fall for a phishing scam, really
ban op for stupidity
It's your own fault.
"Oh yes, of course, Microsoft is calling me to help me fix my problems! Because I totally remember giving them my phone number, and they probably don't have anything better to do than help one of their millions of customers!"
My mom got called by one of them, she didn't even fall for it, you're pretty stupid.
I didn't want to be rude, I was suspicious from the start.
i feel sorry for you bro, keep on trucking!
Some Nigerian tried to get my Nan to fall for this but she called them out on their bullshit.
I get there every other week. "LOOK, SIR. LOOK AT EVENT VIEWER, SIR. YOU SEE THOSE ERRORS, SIR? HOW DID THEY GET THERE, SIR? HOW DID THEY GET THERE? SIR? HOW DID YOU GET THOSE ERRORS, SIR? YOUR COMPUTER IS INFECTED, SIR. You MUST go to double u double u double dot, sir? Yes? dot pee for perfect cee for celery m for mango, sir??" Every damn time. So I mess with them a little. One time I convinced I had tried to send them money by putting a £20 note in the CD tray and complaining it didn't seem to send. He sounded genuinely worried :v: Other times I say i have no errors in event viewer or anywhere. They tell me "But SIR, I can see you have malicious files on your computer, sir!" Any ideas for next time?

Or tell them your computer isn't connected to the "interwebs".

If somebody tries this on me, I want to do this: "Errors in C:\Windows\Prefetch? Yeah, where do I find that in Mac OS?"
