Credit/Debit Card and Direct Debits/Phone Contracts

Right, this a question aimed at the UK population:
am currently about to get a contract phone after years of using pay as you go on an ancient brick, I was wondering if using a credit card in place of my debit card would be a better way to increase my credit score? Is this useful for direct debits or is it useless?
Also, when setting up a direct debit, are the funds relating to the direct debit taken out automatically when needed or do you set a date for the funds to be transferred?
Apologies my banking knowledge is absolutely terrible.

Yes, you will sign a contract and they will take it out of your account monthly
