shit source, have some more

I call bullshit. Not even Romney is that stupid. I want audio or video of him saying this.
And all 3 of your sources are pretty biased. Thinkprogress at least links to LA Times, but that article kinda suggests it was a joke.
If this is real, then Romney is more than fucking idiot.
yes
because what fires need is y'know
more oxygen
If this is true, then hooo boy he's gonna have another asshole torn up by the opposition
Smaller aircraft often do have windows that open.
At lower altitudes and speeds, it is just fine to open a window.
Hell in small aircraft you can even make "door turns" where you open one of the doors in order to turn the aircraft.
Any idea what model her aircraft was?

A learjet probably

The TP article shows an image of a small bizjet

Someone find a legit source for this so I can bathe in sweet republican tears

Probably a Cessna, I've heard stories of people taking off, and landing using only the rudders.

Yeah one of the images appears to be a larger aircraft that would lack such features.
I think pressurization becomes more difficult when you have windows that can open.
That said, you can also suffocate a fire that way. Put on O2 masks and dump the pressurization. No O2 for the fire.

Yeah that is the image.
Small windows and the like suggest it has a pressurized cabin.
And to think that a person this monumentually thick has a chance of becoming president of the most powerful country in the world.
at least assuming that he's talking about large passanger planes.
because rapid decompression such as this would not be more life risking.

That's not how explosive decompression works though.

He did say it at a comedic fundraiser with comedian David Foster.
You got a point.

LA Times legit enough?

it's not the main story but the quote is in there
“I appreciate the fact that she is on the ground, safe and sound. And I don’t think she knows just how worried some of us were,” Romney said. “When you have a fire in an aircraft, there’s no place to go, exactly, there’s no — and you can’t find any oxygen from outside the aircraft to get in the aircraft, because the windows don’t open. Can an aircraft/human body really withstand this? Surely venting all the air is gonna cause some serious pressure changes... Replacing it with another gas would make sense but I doubt aircraft have such a capacity.
Apparently he failed basic science as a child. Anyone with an even rudimentary understanding of the atmosphere would know that the air is too thin to breathe at 35,000 feet, which is why airplane windows don't open.
Can an aircraft/human body really withstand this? Surely venting all the air is gonna cause some serious pressure changes... Replacing it with another gas would make sense but I doubt aircraft have such a capacity.
You don't have to vent it all immediately. Or even all of it in the first place. Just enough to make the fire manageable enough to extinguish using on board equipment, or enough to keep you safe until you can make an emergency landing.
Not that it will be particularly pleasant either way.
Can an aircraft/human body really withstand this? Surely venting all the air is gonna cause some serious pressure changes... Replacing it with another gas would make sense but I doubt aircraft have such a capacity.
The passengers could, but I'm not sure the aircraft would. It'd have to be a slow, controlled pressure release and not 300 panicked animals throwing all the windows open at once.

humans can survive low pressures but not for long
hell we can even survive a vacuum for about a minute or so if there's immediate medical treatment afterwards

Aircraft arent really pressurized all that much

if we have an oxygen source we can survive at the altitude passenger aircraft fly for a pretty long time

It's really not all that much of a pressure difference, the body can pretty much withstand that for a long enough time to take out the fire. Rapid decompression is a bigger problem with diving and such, you're going from multiple atmosphere's worth of pressure to one when surfacing. An airplane is going from one atmosphere to somewhat less. Even to a complete vacuum, it's not a crazy big difference. There are minor problems with doing it still, but it's actually not that far fetched.
If Romney actually did say that, I bet he doesn't know jack about high altitudes; larger potential for extreme temperatures (less air filtering out the sunlight; it's apparently why space can be pretty hot or pretty cold), thinner air, lower pressure, higher exposure to ionizing radiation, the LAST thing a traveler needs is to open a window. Closer to space you get, the more dangerous it is to remain outside.
For all his big Inquisitorial mouthings, he seems to know not all that much about science; then again he's a bloody Republican, which as we know are barely a few levels above Amish folk on the tech tree.
If it's fake though, never mind, though nonetheless I reserve my spite and contempt for Conservatives.
Also, speaking about decompression, do eyes really pop if you rapidly transition from normal pressure to vacuum, or is that just another sci-fi myth?

To be fair, most politicians dont know shit about science, they are usually educated as lawyers or something to that effect.
That's a pretty sad thing. But imagine if we had a Democrat president who was big into science; that would be awesome. Speaking of which, is Obama into science much or is he too busy dealing with the crippled economy to put any quantum harmonizers into photonic resonation chambers?

But iron wouldn't that cause a parabolic destabilization of the fission singularity?!

well he seems to be pretty big on the science that deals with energy. Steven Chu seems like a good pick for Secretary of Energy, though, so Obama's got his back covered.
