Depends on the motherboard.
its a asus with a lga775 socket
{more specs if i can get them}

that's the desktop
it should work, have him download cpu-z and post the mainboard tab here.
It's not that huge of an upgrade. The question is - what does he use it for? If for games, then replacing the 7300 LE (and probably PSU) is vastly more important than the CPU.
They are both Socket 775, so it will work.

Not entirely true. If the BIOS can't support the processor it won't work.

It could work. A few years ago I had a mainboard that didn't support my E6400. It still worked, but it underclocked it when I didn't set the clock manually.
I still recommend getting a supported motherboard though. :v:

pretty much this
the motherboard is an Asus P5BW-LA
An E8x00 will not work in this machine. The board has an i965 chipset which only supports 65nm Core 2 CPUs with a FSB of up to 1066 MHz. The fastest CPU you could possibly use would be an E6700.

forgot about that, I just remembered it can't support quad-cores.
You should really aim to get a new graphic card instead of a cpu.
or even a whole new setup

Depends on the blender.
