The Langenberg wildlife park in Langnau am Albis, south of the city of Zurich, touts itself as a place where visitors can get close to nature. But revelations about items on the menu at the park’s restaurant sparked an outcry.
“Is this not an April Fool’s joke?” online news site Der Landbote this week quoted a visitor saying after noticing deer from the park on the bill of fare.
“I can hardly believe it, this surprised me very much.”
Martin Kilchenmann, spokesman for the park, confirmed to the newspaper that guests at the restaurant can eat meat from the park’s animals.
But he said the use of the meat was “very ecological” and shows visitors the animals’ “natural cycle”.
Every year around 100 animals are born in the park but because of space restrictions not all of them can remain.
If the animals cannot be placed elsewhere they are killed and many are used by the restaurant.
Kilchenmann said 49 deer and 10 wild boar were shot in the wildlife park in 2012 and “recycled” for human consumption, Der Landbote reported.
“I am shocked,” said Ruth Widmer, president of the local animal protection association, who said efforts should be made to limit wildlife animal births in the park.
What a good idea, if theres nothing wrong with the meat then why not use it in the restaurant.
Why not serve it? Venison is deer isn't it?
It's a pretty cool "circle of life" idea if you think about it.

Animals being used as food, how shocking.
I understand some people are kind of fixated on animal protection and animal rights but isn't this kind of thing taking it too far? I mean, how is it any different from standard wildlife culling procedures in game reserves and national parks?
i think that's a great idea.
don't quite understand why people are outraged by it, it's not like the restaurant is next to the deers home and they show you the deer before they kill it. :v:
What's wrong about it? How's it better to cremate the animals?

What the heck is he thinking? Is he expecting them to sterilize the boars and deer they have? Which would, you know, make them suffer far more than living a happy fucky life and then get killed quickly?
Or does he suggest handing the boars condoms?
Must be pretty fucking dandy meat.

Venison is pretty good.
Can't say the same about wild boar though, never tried it.

Got to cook it low and slow for best results, it usually ends up pretty tough otherwise. Wild piglets can be given other treatment if you like though.

Now there is a concept. Sit at your desired window table and point out which deer you want a slice of!

Sounds similar to choosing your own live seafood and having it prepared to order how you like it.
I'd love to eat at a restaurant serving venison and wild boar that they raised themselves. And if they'd have the cull the animals anyway, it only makes sense not to waste them.
There's a place called the rare breeds centre where I used to live. They had unusual and exotic breeds of various farm animals. They payed for the upkeep by selling the meat of these animals - if they didn't then they would go extinct.
Deer jerky is the best thing ever.

She thinks that having male and female animals live separately is better than killing some of the young for food and population control.
We have a lot of small organizations like these that like to get outraged at petty things.
And yes, they do have a shitload of deer. You usually see like 3 dozen already just from looking on it from outside.
Doesn't one else feel weirded out about this? Don't get me wrong it's a good idea, but it's just weird that they use the Meat from the animals from their zoo.
Deer are so majestic... it's a shame that they taste even better.
this is pretty messed up though. in the year of our lord jesus christ, 2014, people still don't realise that eating meat is actually immoral.

it's true
once I killed a deer for food but it was still alive
it looked at me and said
"how could you"
funny how something that is basically a part of life is somehow "immoral"

Plenty of people get eaten too.. sometimes.

Most everything we do as humans can be considered immoral. What is your basis for morality? Is it the ability of those creatures to perceive pain? If so, what is your opinion on eating fish and non-chordates which lack the capacity to "feel" pain? (Those creatures simply respond to a "pain" stimulus and "feel" nothing.)
I don't have a problem with that. On top of that deer meat served like "Hirschpfeffer" is the shit.
"We're heating up the lobster tank, so hurry if you want to pet 'em before you eat 'em!"

I would say boar is the tastiest meat I've ever tried. After lamb, it is extremely soft and very tasty.
