Death Grips is not helping me focus, please advise :V
I listen to bebop (Jazz) or chill-hop. The rhythmic/harmonic movement, at least for me, helps my brain to process in a more creative way.

If it's a more monotonous/get it done fast kind of essay, classical is a good choice.
DJ Dong will inspire you in your essay writing beyond all of your expectations.
Whatever you do, DON'T listen to Korpiklaani whilst doing any task; you might rush that said task and make mistakes. I once made the mistake of listening to them whilst chopping chicken :v:

Research paper, I'll go for some Nujabes
Hans Zimmer's works are good to listen to while working
Burial
Well, when I try to focus, I usually turn the music off or get something like Pink Floyd on. Slow is good.
Earth's The Bees Made Honey in the Lion's Skull works very well, too
Some sweet classical always do me good when doing school work. Where is my mind - Maxcence Cyrin is by far my favorite. Some jazz type songs with nice rhythmic movement also works
Punk
Listen to music without lyrics.
No music, you will get distracted.
Instrumental albums are good for that

GG Allin is the best.

I listen to anime OSTs while working, can't listen to classical cause I start paying attention to the music
Anal Cunt
I'd recommend something you are comfortable with and know well so you can shift focus as you work.
If you're looking for soundtracks, the stuff from SimCity works quite well for me. You can't really go wrong with some jazzy tunes.
Other than that, you might get interested in the ambiental tunes from Deus Ex, Tiberian Sun and Assassin's Creed.
There are a few compilations around youtube made by a dude called warren010h, with time stamps and download links, so you can listen them whenever you want. Here is the first one.
Also, you might want to take a look at myNoise. There's a lot of variety in terms of noise machines, if that's your thing.

Only if it has lyrics
This channel was my go-to during intense study sessions:

these two are my favorite, but the rest of his mixes are really solid and he features tons of great artists.
Otherwise, use mixcloud! Cinambientique is one of my favorites of all time. Just excellently atmospheric mixes that are interesting enough to be worth listening to but not so intrusive that they are distracting.
Even with fuckloads of meds, I still need some sort of noise in the background to stop good ol ADHD from making me super distractable. These mixes and stations got me through three quarters of academic brutality :v:
I always try and avoid music with lyrics because it distracts me a lot from my school work for some reason.
Mostly slow-paced chill tunes when I'm doing my writing.
Undertale soundtrack usually works for me
Aphex Twin could help you. I recommend Selected Ambients 85-92.
Blockhead always put me in the zone while writing
I wrote an entire essay about the Soviet Union's Great Purge while listening to a Devo album.
My English teacher later told me it was one of the best essays that year, and the best for that project.
So yeah, Devo is good for the mind.

Which album though was it?
