Now, Valve developer (and well-known programmer) Michael Abrash has revealed what kind of hardware the company is prototyping: computer technology you can wear. It's certainly an important time to admit such a thing, considering how Google's Project Glass heads-up display generated so much interest last week, but Abrash cautions that you shouldn't expect a product out of Valve anytime soon, if at all: To be clear, this is R&D – it doesn’t in any way involve a product at this point, and won’t for a long while, if ever – so please, no rumors about Steam glasses being announced at E3. It’s an initial investigation into a very interesting and promising space, and falls more under the heading of research than development. The Valve approach is to do experiments and see what we learn – failure is fine, just so long as we can identify failure quickly, learn from it, and move on – and then apply it to the next experiment. The process is very fast-moving and iterative, and we’re just at the start. How far and where the investigation goes depends on what we learn. The reveal is actually part of a long, fascinating blog post about how Abrash was first drawn to work at Valve, after years at Microsoft, Intel (on the canceled Larrabee graphics architecture) and id, where he coauthored Quake, not to mention how the intense freedom at Valve (and a love of Neal Stephenson's Snow Crash) helped him start building the wearable computing R&D project in the first place. It's hard to think of a better recruiting pitch, and he's even asking for interested talent to shoot him an email. Head on over to our source link to take a look.
Source Article:http://www.theverge.com/2012/4/13/2947088/valve-reveals-secret-hardware-project-wearable-computing Abrash's Blog Post: http://blogs.valvesoftware.com/abrash/valve-how-i-got-here-what-its-like-and-what-im-doing-2/
I love Valve. Makes me wonder what they'll be looking into in particular. Perhaps this is why that guy from Apple was there? Discussing portable hardware tech?
so much valve news recently are they trying to create a media storm
we should've had wearables a long fucking time ago. It's not hard to pull off, and it's only recently being stepped into with Project Glass and such. There's been video watches and such, but they all suck. Right now, the only wearable computer system i know of is what soldiers wear in combat areas.
I've always fantasized about some sort of technology that you would wear on your arm! Not really like a one of those clunky huge pip-boy things. but like a small smartphone bracelet thing guy sort of ish!
I WANT THE VALVE EYEPATCH
To be honest, it [likely] can't be bad, it's VALVe.
I see through your tricks Valve! You're just trying to set our minds off Half-Life 3 by showing other amazingly awesome projects.
To be honest, it [likely] can't be bad, it's VALVe.
I honestly hate when people type "Valve" as "VALVe". Back on topic, you can't always trust Valve with everything, remember Ricochet?

Serious fucking swag
They're going to sell hats
Ah, I can't wait for this wareable computing craze to really pick up. If it's done right, Project Glass is going to be another iPhone (in terms of its popularity and trend setting (not being first does not preclude trend setting), not its awful parts).
VALVe is actually the correct way to type their name.
Yeah, but it looks awful outside of their logo. Just type 'Valve' please.
So, I think it might be some sort of wearable jacket ensemble that incorporates both motion sensing components and biometric feedback(Get shot in the chest in-game, a vibrator triggers in your jacket and you actually feel it in your actual chest). Also, I remember a comment(not sure where on Facepunch) where another user hypothesized that a game could detect your actual life signs and incorporate them into the gameplay(The L4D Director becoming more and more active/inactive depending on your heart rate). All this while still looking insanely fashionable and trendy. If they pull off something like that and make it insanely successful, then holy fucknuts... :v:
Compuhats. Oh god what have I done?
They're going to sell hats
And there will be random Unusuals with laser-based holograms making particle effects around the hats. [editline]Sorry for the AotS video.[/editline] (Valve is not responsible for any blinding, burning, electrocution, or cancer from the unusual hats).
I don't really want to wear my computer, I don't understand the obsession people have with it. It looks stupid, seems like it would be uncomfortable and very distracting, and doesn't offer anything new that, say, an iPhone or Droid can't do, besides being perched on your face. Plus you can't use a keyboard and that's a pretty huge turnoff for me as I don't like talking to my face-computer in public in order to make it do things and I really don't want it to read my mind.
Wearable computers have been worked on for a very long time now just that recently have people been showing progress. VALVe is actually the correct way to type their name.
No, it's not.
No, it's not.
Shut up. This thread is not "VALVe or Valve?" it's something completely different.
No, it's not.
yuh-huh nuh-uh yuh-huh
it's important to have no less than five computers on your person at all times just don't leave them all on if you're expecting messages
I feel like were never gonna here about half life 3 :(

Novint is developing it, they have a video of it in use. let me dig it up real quick. EDIT: Here it is: http://www.novint.com/index.php/novintxio

Also, it's like they're trying real hard not to talk about HL3. This wearable computing thing isn't even related to anything the company has worked on before, and it's not like they're running low on things to do. Give me some news already.
