While other groups have recovered from the recession, men—who have struggled to keep pace with a changing job market—have been slower to climb out of the hole. Two-thirds of the men out of work say they are not even looking for jobs any more, which means the government does not count them towards the unemployment rate.
The problem is that nobody's hiring. You've got people with 10+ years experience in office work, operating cash registers and stocking shelves.

I work in a bankruptcy law firm and I get to see first hand; people who have developed their business for 10+ years only to have financial troubles and resort to working at fast food places because of it It's a huge thing here in Florida to be a "Girl personal assistant that can also act sexy" - sometimes the job is offered straight out to be done topless. Not saying it's completely relevant but there is a multiplicity of jobs around here that are only offered to woman

I thought this was something you'd see only in movies as a gag, I didn't know this was an actual thing.
The problem is that nobody's hiring. They don't even have the courtesy of sending you a denial letter.
Are you shitting me? I thought this was something you'd see only in movies as a gag, I didn't know this was an actual thing.
That combined with the scarcity of jobs and a job description like that really grinds my gears. How is that appropriate or professional in the slightest?
I can't imagine what it would be like to just not find a job no matter how hard you're looking. Sounds terrible...
I can't imagine what it would be like to just not find a job no matter how hard you're looking. Sounds terrible...
I sent out at least a dozen applications in one summer. Never got any interviews, they never even responded. I eventually had to settle for a below-minimum wage, weekend job where I was officially listed as a "paid volunteer". I still enjoyed it though. The people there were great to work with, and I came back the next summer. But the point is, there are next to no jobs for people who don't already have prior experience. Then you have those dipshit baby-boomers who go around calling us lazy bums for not having a job.
I have a couple friends that work in site security, they regularly have people there with phds that are working as basic security jobs because nobody will hire them because they have phds or are older or simply that nobody is hiring.
What are their phds in?
Don't remember, I was told this months ago.
I sent out at least a dozen applications in one summer. No prior work experience, but I was very convincing with my drafting test and my 4 years of highschool drafting classes, but that was at the tail end of more than 40 applications sent out and not a single damned response. Also I foudn out that the first 20 were effectively useless because my resume's intro paragraph read like that really shitty "has anyone ever so can't like" quote. It literally made no sense. 'Shoulda had a friend look over it' I was told. I did. They didn't catch it somehow and neither did I.
Probably because the education system these days never really knuckles down on English until you reach college level.
The thing is though, is I don't even remember writing it, my original draft when I first entered the work force wasn't like that but somehow the draft I sent my friend and the one I got back ahd that paragraph. Friend has no idea how he missed it, and I have no idea how it got there. Had to gut the whole thing and throw one together really fast, but I didn't even bother reapplying to most of the affected areas because I knew they wouldn't give a shit either way.
We've all heard it.
We're looking for someone with a little bit more experience.

We don't want to train you and we don't care if you are certified. The beggars are choosers.
Haha reminds me when I was applying for traineeships in business administration last year. Literally at almost every interview I went to, there was a hot chick who was going for the same job. Most of the traineeships involved receptionist work so you can guess which people got those jobs. Not complaining though, I later found a job as a grocery worker for a supermarket and sure it doesn't look as good on a resume but it works around uni for me, my managers are fair, I put in a lot of effort and in return I get offered to do heaps of hours (only rostered for 12 last week but I ended up doing 38, when the department average is somewhere below 20 each week) and lastly it's actually pretty decent work. I look at it as a good workout that I get paid good money to do.
his posture is AWFUL
If you had no hope at all you'd walk pretty stooped, too.
Then you have those dipshit baby-boomers who go around calling us lazy bums for not having a job.
Older adults, including my own parents, are the most infuriating part of the job hunt today. Let's go over a few of my favourite statements from our baby-boomers: "You can't expect to start at the top." That's why I was looking for Junior positions. And yet idiots post "Junior Web Developer - Requires 3 years of experience". Are you for fucking real? Please figure out what "Junior" means before posting more job descriptions I have to read through. And put experience at the top instead of the bottom so I don't have to waste minutes reading retarded job postings, thanks. "You're not trying hard enough." Remember when you didn't need to go to college to get a career? You didn't have to work all summer just to still not be able to afford tuition, or take on the burden of student debt for years to come? Yeah those were good times, weren't they? Fuck off. "In my day we went door to door handing in resumes and meeting people." Applying for web developer jobs in the age of the internet, and you still think this is the way to do things? It makes you look like a tool, especially considering your job revolves around the fucking internet. And my personal favourite: "Just take whatever you can get" So according to you, I just went to school for years so I can go make minimum wage in the fucking holes I just spent years trying to get away from? GENIUS. Remind me to never ask for your advice again. Getting told things like "we've all been through this" when you're taking night classes, working part-time, and still getting your school shit done is fucking insulting. No, you never went through anything like this. And when you compare average salaries and home prices 30 years ago to what it is now in my area, you used to pay about 2-2.5 times your family's yearly salary for a home. Now it's closer to 4.5-5 times. (And that's with a lot more families where both parents work, as opposed to 30 years ago) A summer of work could pay off a year of tuition with some left over, and now it doesn't even pay the full year. I could go on and on about just how fucking wrong people are about the average person's economic status but I won't bother. I fucking hate baby boomers.

I'm in this boat too. I'm white male. Temp services are useful for temporary job. That's what I'm working at the moment but when I move out and get my own place I'll probably resort to warehouse work until I can get some sort of accounting degree. I hate when something says Entry Level then says 2-3 years experience required. Like wow you dumb fucks don't know what entry means do you.
Not to mention when you walk into a place to apply and they tell you to go apply online.
"I'm right here with the paper asshole. Take my fucking resume you slut of a receptionist."
Not to mention when you walk into a place to apply and they tell you to go apply online.
that's the worst part any corporation of any size always re directs you to a new place with fewer answers than the place before. like my last job, I went in, dropped off a resume, was told no one would read. went online, submitted one. waited a week to hear anything. Went in after a week to an interview. They didn't tell me I would be co interviewing with 5 other people for the same job at the same exact time. yeah, that's a good corporate process.
I am 21 and can count the number of jobs I've had on one hand and the number of permanent non-contractual jobs I've had on 0 hands. I'm applying for the lowest positions and nobody is taking it at all despite forklift training, php developer for almost 2 years, bilingual, foodsafe, first aid, not socially awkward at interviews...
Yeah uuh.. you're 21. You're not supposed to have 10 years work experience under your belt because that would literally be illegal.
And this is why talk of the recovery is bullshit. 17% of working-age men being unemployed is a fucking disaster.
And this is why talk of the recovery is bullshit. 17% of working-age men being unemployed is a fucking disaster.
It's more like 25% for teenagers from what I hear.
And my personal favourite: "Just take whatever you can get" So according to you, I just went to school for years so I can go make minimum wage in the fucking holes I just spent years trying to get away from? GENIUS. Remind me to never ask for your advice again.
Conversely, anyone who goes to college for a specific discipline and expects to be doing that immediately upon graduation for a decent salary is overly optimistic. I went to school for the fledgling field of game design and learned to be a programmer, with a side of art design. As I got closer to graduation I realized that in the current economic climate, a job like game programming is too narrow, competitive, and oversaturated for me to be able to reasonably expect a competitive wage. So I applied for programming, web development, and Flash developer positions, and got a job elsewhere. Web development is a flooded market because, like many online-oriented fields, it has no real geographical presence. If you're trying to get a job as a freelance web developer in this market, you're competing with professionals who have been around for years all over the world. So if that's not working, you need to look elsewhere- not necessarily McDonald's, but other fields where you can apply the same basic skills. Most people don't go into the fields they were educated in. Some take completely different turns. If you're dead-set on getting a job in one particular field, especially a highly competitive and challenging one, you're going to have problems. It's important to keep some perspective and keep expectations realistic. Also, because a couple of people have said it, 'entry' or 'junior' doesn't mean you don't need any qualifications, just that they're low-level positions with opportunity to advancement. Many businesses will consider college education in a relevant field, especially with co-op work while pursuing that degree, towards relevant experience. In this economic climate, though, you can't expect businesses in technical fields to hire and train people with no relevant experience.
