I am looking to buy new 2.1 speakers that sound good, but are decently cheep (under $150) Any suggestions
I use these: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16836166006 I've had them for over a year and I love them. Edit: Although they are 2.0, I find that they don't need a sub, if you want 2.1 heres my suggestion. http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16836121036
My only suggestion is that there is a U in Computer.
Logitech Z-2300 - http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16836121122 Very strong sub on this system, which makes them ideal for games and movies. Not so much music though, unless you love dubstep.
Logitech Z-2300 - http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16836121122
fucking this
I'm still using the same 2.1 set I've had since early 2000. :P One of my friends has the Logitech Z-2300. It has a good base and decent sound quality for what it is.
Z-2300 sound bad. The treble is abysmal and the bass is way too boomy. It sounds like the room is going collapse.
Yeah, they're by no means great music speakers. But the over-the-top bass is perfect for games and movies. And it can be turned down to more reasonable levels anyway, I always have the bass knob at 9 o'clock.
imo http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16836127010 best set for music, and pretty good for movies and games [editline]01:41AM[/editline] and fyi 2.1/5.1/7.1 is gimmicky crap meant to cover up bad satellites.

I've used both of these, they are both great and pretty good looking. Two subs, on the base of each speaker. If you are going 2.0, don't get the AV30s. Get the AV40s at minimum. Speaking of which I need to upgrade. You shouldn't need to go 2.0 though if you want decent audio on all ranges (not just midbass and above). Altec Lansing has some decent sets and so does Logitech (they have one that isn't bad the model escapes me). If you aren't going to be super-critical it doesn't matter /that/ much as long as you aren't outright missing entire critical frequency ranges (which you will be without 5-8" woofers to be honest). That said, investigate a good 2.1 set. You will be far more satisfied as most are when they can hear frequencies below 60Hz
music rarely goes below 60 Hz because so many people can't hear (or at least distinguish) the notes. movies might have some ambient noise like a fan buzz or something but nothing that will really take away from the story. [editline]02:19AM[/editline] also the AV40s are $50 over OP's budget
They can be had for $150 CAD (that's what I got mine for anyway; they should be cheaper in the states too, ya?) If you listen to any bassy music (hip-hop, rap, techno, etc) or watch movies/games with explosions, you're going to miss the sub just because the speakers don't produce the full sound you expect from the lower end of the audible range. Comparing with headphones to the speakers, I find myself missing a lot and now rarely use my speakers for movies/gaming/etc but rather for ambient music while working or somesuch. I will remedy this with larger speakers or a subwoofer though, ones who are able to produce the range I desire for my genres of music ~ . ~
the AV40s are around 190 USD usually, the AV30s can be had pretty easily for $100
