Over the last week Microsoft has begun to roll out a combination of highly questionable changes to the billion+ users of Windows 7 and Windows 8 and these efforts will intensify into early 2016. The highlights (lowlights?) are as follows:
1. Reversing User Settings
A perfect example of how Microsoft is no longer respecting user choice comes via revelations that it is silently changing Windows 7 and Windows 8 user preferences without warning. Speaking to ComputerWorld, Josh Mayfield – the software engineer behind the popular ‘GWX Control Panel’ app which works to stop Windows 10 upgrades – explained:
“Over Thanksgiving weekend I started getting reports that the Windows Update ‘AllowOSUpgrade’ setting was getting flipped back on on a number of people’s PCs, and it keeps re-setting itself at least once a day if they switch it back off…This is new behavior, and it does leave your PC vulnerable to unwanted Windows 10 upgrade behavior.”
2. Removing the Decline Option
In addition to this InfoWorld has spotted a very sneaky alteration to the Get Windows 10 pop-up itself that is leaving users at a loose end. Following a change to language that already gave users two stark options: ‘Upgrade now’ or ‘Start download, upgrade later’, the pop-up now only offers: ’Upgrade now’ or ‘Upgrade tonight’.
3. The ‘Recommended’ Farce
For those with the willpower to keep turning down upgrade requests, Microsoft has already confirmed it will soon make Windows 10 upgrades automatic for Windows 7 and Windows 8 users who haven’t chosen to customise their core Windows Update settings.
To achieve this Microsoft will simply reclassify Windows 10’s status in Windows Update from ‘Optional’ to ‘Recommended’ because default Window 10 settings install ‘Important’ and ‘Recommended’ updates as standard. Again this will require user intervention to stop.
Expect The Unexpected
As such the outlook for those who wish to remain on Windows 7 or Windows 8 is looking grim. Yes you will be able to dodge Microsoft’s increasingly aggressive and sneaky upgrade tactics, but it won’t make for much of a fun existence if it requires endlessly dismissing notification prompts, tweaking Windows settings and upgrading third party blocking tools. Thank god I'm using Debian GNU/Linux and don't have to deal with this crap.
And thus why competition is a good thing.
thanks nutella
This shit is getting pretty fucking ridiculous, either people do or don't want to upgrade to 10. How is this not illegal?
Glad you posted this.. I'm going to go make sure mine is turned 'off' right now!
On one hand, upgrading to Windows 10 right now is a bad move because I still don't like all the incompatibilities and problems 10 has with so many games and programs out there. There's not much we can really do about old games besides fans trying to make patches and compatibility the hard way, but when modern games may not support Windows 10 either occasionally due to a focus on Vista/7, that's a problem.
On the other hand, once everyone's inevitably forced to go to 10 if they're connected to the net, because fuck you Microsoft and the lack of choice in the matter, that means more developers hopefully would try to make their games compatible for obvious reasons. But still, they really shouldn't be forced to in this circumstance.
How is this not worth a huge class action lawsuit by companies who's software suddenly no longer works because the OS forced itself to install?

My wireless adapter isn't compatible with Windows 10 so I get random blue screens.
But you know, fuck the people who can't afford to upgrade hardware. :why:
I'm seriously contemplating just downgrading to Vista to run away from Microsoft's nagware shoving, even though I've been able to keep it relatively at bay by not leaving autoupdates on.
I render a lot over nights, doesn't the Windows 10 ( version that it will update to) allow itself to update and restart whenever the hell it wants to? Am I screwed here?
This is pretty shitty If true... but... this is also another article jumping on the WINDOWS 10 hate-wagon when this had happened in error before... and well I am reserving judgement...
Edit: soo apparently your screwed... sounds like they will make the upgrade mandatory in 2016 and you might lose your downgrade...
Microsoft give us money if your windows 10 update fucking screws up our computers like my brother's did.

You can set when the restart occurs, mine happen at 3:30 AM because that's when the automated system has decided I don't use my computer a lot.
For illiterates this is probably a good way to get them on Win 10. Windows 10 isn't scary, you should probably just upgrade and work any smaller incompatibilities, but if there's a large issue with something not being compatible I understand.
[editline]16th December 2015[/editline]
OS standardization, to an extent greater than we have right now, is a great thing for development and will likely usher in improved stability in a few years.
great, im just about to buy Win10 tomorrow (new comp, dont have any older OS available) and now there's this crap. suddenly i don't feel like giving them an excessive amount of my precious money but i dont really have any options either.
how bad and numerous are the compatibility issues in this draconian-orwellian hellspawn, exactly? im out of the loop when it comes to these things
Why is the third highlight even in there. TH2 fixed a lot of issues with the base version so it makes sense that it's recommended now. Surely all the people who don't want it have automatic updates turned off already since it's a single radio button selection to disable and therefore it's exactly the same as before.
"Automatic updates is on, why is it updating automatically?"
Honestly? Good. The last thing we need is another XP situation. Even years after the fact there were still XP apologists railing against Vista and even 7, and it made standardization a chore because some people didn't wanna move on to the latest APIs and feature-sets. Let's keep everyone on the latest version, please.
I tried upgrading, ended up with no desktop and needing to run everything through control panel. Everything worked up until I log in and the desktop loads. explorer.exe promptly crashes and that's that.
Might have to update BIOS or someshit considering how old mine is.

Windows being a monopoly seems so out of place in 2015. But then again to most non-PC gamers so is a PC itself.
I'd upgrade, but last time it did my PC was unusable until I used the option to restore my previous OS.
I'm sure Microsoft is also going to remove the option to go back.
Windows 10 is very nice, but I want to save it for my next big PC upgrade instead of risking my current install.
I like windows 10. Really, the main bad thing is that its forced if you dont want it

Nah I'm good. My win7 rig works flawlessly I have absolutely 0 reasons to upgrade to win 10. Now win 10 has been fine on my lappy that ran win 8.1 but microsoft can honestly fuck off with these aggressive updates. I'll upgrade when I build a new rig.
I had to go to my grandpa's house over the weekend because his computer automatically updated to windows 10.
The subtle differences in windows 10 were overwhelming for the old man.
My laptop will literally break if it updates to Windows 10, the drivers for it do not exist. Drop it, Microsoft, thanks.
My next machine will come with it preinstalled. I'll get to experience it. Don't worry. I need this one to last a little while longer.
Every time I hear something about Windows 10 (which I personally have never had a problem with) I think of this. NSFW for language.
I've never had an update screen come up on me.

Windows 10 has some "default" drivers that may help with that, I only had to install my video drivers because of that.

I'd rather not risk finding out.
I suspect once the forced update come along, instead of the unified platform Microsoft wants', Geek Squad winds up being the ones with tons of customers who want to either revert, or had their computer broken by it!
Can't tell you how many times I've died in Dark Souls because it'll tab me out to bitch at me about upgrading.
Motherfucker, I don't want your shit. Get out of here.

Can you give examples?
I'm not trying to undermine your idea, I just haven't seen any (personally)
