Sochi Olympics organisers on Sunday admitted more than 10 percent of ticket-holding fans missed their competitions on the first day of the Games but it was due to late arrivals and not necessarily because of tight security.
Organisers said they had sold 92 percent of tickets for all the competitions with attendance figures standing at 81 percent.

"We definitely have a compact Games but a lot of people need to understand what the time for them to travel is [to the competitions]," Sochi Games spokeswoman Alexandra Kosterina told reporters.
Fans have to undergo stringent security checks as part of the Games safety operation with Islamist militants from the North Caucasus region having threatened to attack Russia's first winter Olympics.
Spectators have to undergo several checks, especially in the mountain venues, delaying their entry.
If it truly was for security reasons and not incompetence then that is totally okay, because understandably the winter Olympic Games would definitely be a big target for terrorists.
that title made me think that 10% of the fans are missing as in unable to be found

FSB Took them away.
I came here expecting that aliens had abducted 10% of the Fans... well at least that they had said something bad about the games and all of a sudden gone "missing".
This was much less dramatic then I hoped.
The opening ceremonies apparently didn't fill the stadium. The most expensive Olympics in history, more expensive than all other modern Olympiads combined, couldn't fill the stadium for the opening ceremonies.
In case you somehow didn't notice any of the other zillion problems with Sochi, here's a sign that there is a massive problem with these Games.

someone said the ticket prices for the events are 10X the price of the last one in Vancouver, so its not that surprising (im talking like 36K for one seat at an event).

well no bejing was ~$43,000,000,000 and vancover was ~$9,000,000,000 which is already more than sochi (~$50,000,000,000)

The whole Games cost like 10x more than it should have, likely due to massive embezzlement and corruption more than actual cost overruns, so I'm not surprised that they're passing the cost onto the consumer.
In an age when the economy is, for most people, a flaming sack of shit that's been dropped onto their life savings. :v:

Is this olympics in general or winter olympics?
Because I don't really think it's fair to compare them.
10% of the fans got locked in in the hotel bathrooms
There were some interviews with people on CTV news, apparently the lines are insanely long and nobody is bothering to get into any of the venues.

Imagine if a terrorist got fed up with the long lines and gave up.
At least the competition and sportsmanship has been great.
[editline]10th February 2014[/editline]
And the venue is super pretty.

Nah, they'd just blow up the people standing in line instead.
They didn't have the infrastructure fully ready, which is probably to blame for the tardiness..
A round trip to Sochi is $2000 from YVR. I don't want to know how much hotels, food and other expenses cost. Then, if you actually want to see anything relatively important, like CAN v USA or CAN v RUS in Mens Hockey add thousands more.

I thought the ventilation systems were only 90% operational.

i think he meant winter Olympics

That kinda raises an interesting point, actually. What's the purpose of security when there's an equally large amount of people in big groups before it that could be targeted?

well if they did that it still wouldn't damage the big expensive stadium and that's what they really care about

I got the same vibes from the title too. But can't judge a book by its cover, since it's just because of tight security that'd make TSA look like a bunch of hippies, rather than mass disappearances on the part of some whack-job secret police.
And by "you can't judge a book by its cover", I mean you can't judge a book by its cover and not look like a big ol' dummy.
I wonder if Germany will ever host the Olympics again. I have to say it would be kinda awesome to have a few disciplines in the Berlin Olympia stadium. It has an amazing historical vibe to it. It's modern on the inside though.
You should definitely fix that title, bro.
What is the common rate for this?
