Getting an iPhone 4 within the next three days - please tell me what to do
15 replies, posted
Hello there!
I still use an 'old fashioned' mobile phone without apps/browser/touch whatsoever.
Also I didn't plan on getting a new phone (even a smartphone) any time soon.
Now my dad came up with the brilliant idea of changing all of our families mobile phone contracts so everyone of
us is getting a new phone - including me: AN IPHONE 4!
Is there anything I need to know?
I mean.. (free) must-have Apps anyone already knows about except me or are there any settings/controls I need
to change in order to get the maximum out of my iPhone? Any updates/fixes? I'm sure I forgot something but you
see I have no clue.
Thanks in advance :)
Look into jailbreaking. If what you want out of your phone is the maximum it's definitely the way to go. There's a great thread here with details and it's a good place to post if you need help:

Also check out my old thread, there are still a few gems in the list that are must haves:

Thanks, will have a look at it!
Do you have to get your phone now? Because, come WWDC '11, the iPhone 5 will be announced :P

My dad ordered it already..
If you plan on keeping your phone simple without jailbreak the isn't much.
Just plan on getting a good case you don't want to drop the thing.
You really don't need to worry about settings or anything else. Just remember to turn off 3G when you aren't using the web it drains the battery pretty quick.
When I got mine set up was plain and simple huck it up to iTunes and done.
On the note of a case, I highly recommend the Otterbox case. It's what I use and I've thrown it at a wall before (on accident) and it just bounced off fine.
If you do get the Otterbox there is a garbage screen protector in it that doesn't do anything but limit your touches. I had to hold letters/icons in order to make it register. Just peel it out and you'll be fine without a screen protector. And the Otterbox collects crumbs and dust like crazy, so take it off once a week and wash it really good, and wipe your iPhone down with some electronics wipes after.

Thanks :)
Also thanks for recommending that Otterbox thingy, will have a look at it!
People shouldn't be encouraged to jailbreak iPhones the second they get them. Use it first, if you really think it's lacking something which jailbreaking will offer (fairly limited benefits nowadays) then do it
It doesn't matter what they think. Fact is it is lacking a ton of stuff so why should they miss out on it.
When I had my first iPod I remember posting here asking about jailbreak and it just sounded stupid as hell to me and way to much bother for what it's worth. When I actually jailbroke it I praised the device that little bit more.

So its definitely worth recommending.

If you heard the stories I have utilized my jailbroken iPhone 4 for, you'd be surprised
If I'm honest I don't feel the need to jailbreak at all. It does everything I need it to.
Facebook, music, web and a few games is all I need.
The GPS comes in handy now and then as well.
But I know I would have bad luck plus I don't want to void my warranty which Apple won't cover. I've heard the Apple staff won't even touch a jailbroken product.
No but you can just restore and they'll know no different.
I just had to sent my iPhone 4 back cause someone at Vodafone screwed our contracts and my dad had to cancel the changes :(
Seeing as we now have to wait until our contracts end regularly (around July) and will then go to a new provider I may aswell wait for the next iPhone as someone suggested already :(
Anyway thanks for your help - sooner or later I will get an iPhone (fingers crossed) and this thread will come in handy.

Saw some rumors that the new iPhone will not be released until later this year. Which personally I believe makes sense, especially with the Verizon iPhone just being released recently. Not sure how reliable those rumors might be though.

This is one of the reasons I didn't wait. I can't be arsed with rumours I want facts.
None the less I was still happy with the iPhone 4.
